Brilliant
Alice Ripley for St Jimmy. Please?
That would be something awesome to see.
I guess that's where this thread came from.

Kinda weird
I still wish it was Joan Jett. Or even Cyndi Lauper, ha.
I can smell the desperation from here... might as well just whore this mother out, the dignity was lost long ago.
I want Cher as St. Jimmy.
You guys act like Billie Joe and Melissa Etheridge aren't legitimate rock stars who might actually be appropriate for this kind of show. Billie Joe is absolutely electric as St. Jimmy. I am kind of shocked by how out of nowhere Melissa seems, but I can actually see this working out brilliantly.
Well, I for one might actually go see it again. I love Melissa.
I saw BJA as St. Jimmy six times and LOVED him more and more every performance. I thought he was genius in the show and as that character.
Melissa is throwing me for a loop, on the other hand.
I think Lauper might have been more appropriate.

Joan Jett or Cyndi Lauper would have been much preferable...and both have Broadway experience.
I've never been a fan of Etheridge. Her voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me.
Whoa. I did not see this one coming!! Personally, I loved Billie Joe as St. Jimmy. He gave an electric performance each time I saw him.
However, I never thought of having a female St. Jimmy. Makes me wonder who else could play this role. I could see Juliette Lewis being kinda cool.

Saint Jimmy is an interesting role- it's more or less asexual and gender-neutral, and its only real requirement is a great rock voice and a true rock-star presence onstage.
It's already been noted the difference between Vincent and Armstrong in the role- Vincent has an element of seduction and pleasure to him, and his slithery, somewhat effeminate presence clearly shows him as the "other side" of Johnny in all ways (perhaps even a nod to Billie Joe's straight-leaning bisexual orientation). Armstrong himself is all about danger, destruction and just having a good time with death and chaos. Etheridge, in the same role, who knows what she'll be or do?

Completely guessing here, but I think Melissa Etheridge is actually a fan of the show and asked to be a part of it.
When youtuber Alex Day went to see the show, he sat next to her in the audience and she invited him backstage.

This is one of those indelible moments in theatre history that calls for one to yell "WHAT THE F&#% ARE THEY THINKING?"...
I would love to see Joan Jett tackle this, but Melissa Etheridge, I feel, is too country for such an adrenaline-fueled punk rock musical.
Country? Granted, I'm not a Melissa Etheridge fan at all, but I associate her with being the biggest voice in female blues-rock of the past two decades, with only Amy Winehouse as competition.
"I'm the Only One" and "I Wanna Come Over" are the only two songs I can think of with her off the top of my head. Color me curious if not convinced about her performance.
What about Madge? LOL.
Seriously, I don't care who plays Jimmy. Idiot is the only musical left on Broadway with the slightest bit of an edge, so good on them for keeping it interesting (I haven't seen STOTD, so don't know if it qualifies as being edgy).
Ok, Country was my mistake...but still, this is extremely way far out of left field.
