Definately my mom. It's one of the few things we have in common that we both REALLY love. She started taking me to the X-mas show at Radio City when I was younger, then around 13 or 14 she took me to see Me and my Girl and Tommy. I remember asking my mom what Tommy was about and all I remember was that she mentioned something about pinball and I thought it was going to be boring. Now it's one of my favorite shows.

My mom had never been interested in theatre. I really dont know how I discovered it- just my natural born passion I guess. She hates that I'm and actress too.
TOT: I recall that my MOM thought THE FULL MONTY was the most fun by far. She actually saw it again the next summer when we returned with my niece and newphew. However, she was extremely moved by CABARET (as was I) and this one seemed to stay with her the longest. She spent some time the next day wondering aloud as to what happened to Sally and Cliff after the story in the show ended.

I love this thread. I grew up in Southern Calif., and was dragged to the theater (when Broadway shows hit the Music Center in L.A.), art museums, and ballet... hearing opera records non-stop, etc. I hated everything but ballet, and wished my parents could be like everyone else's and take me to see the Dodgers play baseball! 'No, not Laguna Beach and the art galleries again!' Needless to say, now that I'm much older and hopefully wiser, I'm so glad I had the parents I did. My mom passed away long ago and my dad is 90, but I feel them with me at every show.
I really don't know where their love of the arts came from- my mom grew up in the Jewish ghetto in the East End of London during the war, the daughter of extremely poor immigrants. She and her friends used to somehow get cheap seats to Covent Garden occasionally (maybe they had a 'TKTS' booth type thing?), and would sit up in the highest section to hear symphonies and opera (I still have the programs she saved). At least once they managed to save up enough to take the ferry across the Channel, and went to the Paris Opera House. My dad grew up in the Bronx during the Depression and the war, also the son of immigrants... I can't remember ever being in my parents' house without either the radio being tuned to the classical music station, or opera playing on the record player.
I guess you never appreciate what your parents did for you until it's too late...
These questions make me sad because I see how other parents are so supportive. My parents want nothing to do with theater. I'm just the black swan of the entire family. They've put up with it but never enjoyed it. I'd have to say my biggest influence was just the fact that I'm obsessed with a very addicting show. Thanks to the internet I am able to immerse myself in things that I would normally not be able to experience. So Thank you Internet.
