Pathological describes better than half the posters on BWW. Posts like "Shut up, Wayman" and another making fun of his appearance only go to prove the general low level of discourse here. Wayman at least posts under his own name, and I, along with others here, am glad that he created this thread. Every once in a while there's a teaching moment. This was one of them.
So the lesson is to sink to the level of those who you judge to be wrong?

There wasn't any judgement - they were wrong, and many of them, especially massomen, were particularly obnoxious about it. What on earth is wrong with calling them on it? I was just now called out on being wrong, and I apologized. You don't see me getting upset about it.

This is a somewhat silly conversation.
First of all, it's pretty clear that, in a year with more competition, Memphis probably would not have thrived. As it is now, a good week is about 80% at little more than 1/2 price for the average ticket. Doing fine, but not a big hit by anyone's definition.
Memphis is hardly as bad as High Fidelity or Cry Baby, but it is, undeniably, on the mediocre/lowbrow side of the Broadway spectrum. It's nice that the cast is working and getting paid, but let's not inflate its significance in the Broadway timeline.
It's difficult to imagine it having the staying power and visibility of the show it imitates (Hairspray).
This of course will all mean more once MEMPHIS actually starts making money. It probably will, but it may not be until its toured for a few years and done the community theatre circuit.
How long do you see it lasting on Broadway, MB? Sorry for putting you on the spot. Wayman will surely save your response.
Yes, I'm sure all those posters who predicted Memphis' demise are feeling the burn right now.
I doubt they will be able to sleep tonight after being so humiliated by the public gloating of a fellow poster with what is apparently a vendetta for anyone who doesn't love the same shows he does.
So, mission accomplished?
I mean really, any way you slice it this is a ridiculously immature thread to start.

Well, I don't think it's recouped yet (I may be wrong and I freely admit that), so one of those predictions may yet me true. Because even though it won the Tony, if it doesn't recoup its investment, it will be considered a flop.
(Just saying. I really couldn't care less one way or another about the show.)
Awww whatacute doggie!!
I think it will probably depend on how big of a box office boost the Tony Awards make, but I know the Shuberts have been eyeing a couple of other shows for the fall. My guess is that MEMPHIS will close sometime between September-December.
Whoa.If that did happen, won't that make it one of the shortest running Best Musical winners? I know PASSION holds the record as the shortest.
Yes, but MEMPHIS will tour. Like I said, its almost inevitable that the Broadway production is going to close losing money. The real money is going to be made on the road, and I would imagine the producers, the Shuberts an everyone involved are going to want to just get on with that.
It seems unlikely to me that the Tony win is going to suddenly make MEMPHIS a hot ticket in NYC. And it would really need to become that to extend more than a few months in that very desired theatre.
CHRIST! This is what we were JUST talking about in this thread and here you come along predicting a closing.
Unless you are a producer of the show or somehow have access to the show's financial records, weekly break-even costs, advance sales reports and box office tallies how could you possibly know the show will close in the fall?
I hope Wayman keeps a copy of this one.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
RELAX. I am the one who asked him the question. Michael Bennett is a wise poster, and I value his opinions.
I value his opinions too, but come on... the show just won a Tony. It will be a few weeks at least before anyone connected with the production will know its fate, let alone an outsider.
Also if the rumored movie sale goes through that could change its financial picture.

I have to agree. People need to give these "predictions" a rest.
It's BWW. No one's giving predicting the future a rest. It's what we do. With a side order of snark to make it sting.
If you so repulsed by a hypothetical discussion of a show's success ignore the thread.
Now, can we move on to more important issues?
What will close first: Sister Act, BBAJ, or Yank?
And I predict that Raul will definitely get a nomination for Leap Of Faith.
I predict that your predictions are wrong. Snark that.
Well, when BBAJ closes in the red, I'm going to copy and paste your dismissal of my original prediction and gloat.
Assuming that I haven't already revised my original prediction to reflect a change in my mood.
I've heard Lithium works wonders on that kind of problem.
Yes, as a matter of fact it does.
Not that I know this from experience you understand.

As you could have done this one. If you think this thread is so immature, you could have ignored it. Even now, you are posting things like "***Wong alert!***" in other threads. Do you not see the hypocrisy in that?
Why are you holding up Wayman to a higher standard than yourself?
Oh I'm not at all ghost. But I also don't start threads like this one with some kind of false delusion that I'm any better than anyone else.
And I have said many times over, I post sarcastic comments that you either laugh at or you hate me for. Never denied being a bitch or a hypocrite.
I choose to love you.
