I'm keen to see Mame because I've never had opportunity to see it. But it's a big traditional Broadway musical - I'm not sure it could be reduced to Menier size.
With great and inventive direction any show can be scaled down and made to work in any space. I saw a fantastic production of Follies at the Landor a couple of years ago which, due to some ingenius direction, made it one of the best productions of Follies I've ever seen.

I saw Follies at the Landor as well Bob and thought it was OK but not great. But Follies has a very heavy book that can bear close scrutiny. I'm not sure a musical, as fun as it may be, where a woman makes "the South revive again" merely by going hunting can bear such scrutiny.
Maybe if they focus on the aunt-nephew relationship perhaps...
Night music was last Menier big revival - so they wouldn't be doing two herman shows in a row.
La Cage was originally a big "traditional" broadway musical - so if that can be reduced. It isn't crucial in Mame to have big sets or 30 people on stage - so I think it could be done.
I would love to see Mame staged in a big production again but sadly I can't see any producer really doing it as it would cost millions and sadly it probably would pay off - unless it had a huge huge name, but even then. Sadly that is a sign of the current times. Thats what I love about the Menier - its allowing fantastic pieces to stay alive. One big broadway musical that i think could still work for a fully pledged lavish big revival is 42nd Street - I wish that could come back to the Drury Lane next...oh Cameron do it..!
None of them particularly grab me, but they are the kind of shows that I've seen done very badly, so a good version would be great! I had heard that they were doing Forbidden Broadway tho...
"Maybe if they focus on the aunt-nephew relationship perhaps..."
Precisely. That's what the show is essentially about, so that is where the focus ought to be rather than lost in the "big Broadway" schmaltz. That's why I'd love to see this show scaled down so that it gets to the essence of the piece. "When He Walked Into My Life", for example, could be quite stunning and even more heartbreaking in an intimate atmosphere.

Love both of those composers, so either one would be great.
Or, God forbid - they could actually do a NEW musical!

Mame would be good although I am not familar with it. It is a big scale show but after seeing La Cage, I think it is possible for a big show to be reduced and still work well or in LC cage better. They would have to cast a name for Mame.
Me and My Girl is also good although unlike Mame, I'm not sure if it could work as a small scale production. Robert Lindsay was brilliant as Bill in the 1984 Production so the casting of Bill and Sally will be interesting.
The Pajama Game would be my choice since it hasn't been seen in London for a long time and it would perfect for the Menier to stage and reinvent. The 2006 Broadway cast recording is great and I would love to see on stage.
I wish the Donmar would do Sweet Charity, after their productions of Guys and Dolls and Parade, I am interested what they would with it either as a small scale production at te Warehouse or at a West End Theatre. My choice for Charity would be Joanna Page or Emma Williams.
I don't want a 'Mini Mame'! It belongs on a big West End stage! If they want to do it, do it as the play 'Auntie Mame'. How fab that would be. Its 51 years since it was in the West End with the wonderful Beatrice Lillie at the Adelphi.
OMG, i watched Auntie Mame for the umpteenth time, last night!!! Spooky, spooky, spooky!! I just love it to bits, would be great if it was on stage again, after all those years!! or Mame, who cares, its a great story nonetheless!!! Vote #1 Mama for Vera Charles!!! LOL
On Paul O Grady the other day they had Brian Conley and Joanna Paige performing 'Doing the lambeth walk', and i thought she would make a great Sally, but i just dont think scaled down would work.
I was under the impression that Merrily We Roll Along was for winter, which leaves some months between now and then to do another show.
But then, I'm already late to the thread, so odds are good I'm late to the news that they've totally dropped that idea. Which would be for the best; I like Merrily but would rather not have Ruthie Henshall involved. XP
