Who will come out as #1 for this years top show critically and commercially? Also who do you think will get more tonys? It looks like it will become MEl Brooks vs. Disney!

"Who will come out as #1 for this years top show critically and commercially?"
Um, what? I don't think the top show this year will be Mermaid OR Frankenstein. Look at all of the other great new musicals coming in this season.

Posted: 11/5/07 at 1:28amYou may as well make this thread strictly about money because that's the crown that YF and Mermaid actually have a shot at. Xanadu already garnered some great reviews and there are other shows opening this coming spring that could very likely get better reviews.

Rotel, are you saying that the only thing the two mega-hit musicals of this season are going to get is money; no acclaim, no nominations? That seems a bit far-fetched to snub out these two titans.

Best selling for the season? Wicked and Jersey Boys, again. Critically, that is new? Up for grabs. Too many good shows coming out right now with so much more to offer. We already know both Frankenstein's aren't winning over the critics much. I think everyone said TLM needs some serious help. It depends on who and what is changed as far as TLM status stands right now I think?
Maybe some competition for which one spent the most money to put on a show? I mean number one for the season? In ticket prices? Attendance?
The real question may be is will TLM ever hope to meet and/or exceed TLK?
Set design? Costumes? I hope it's A Catered Affair, just comparing pictures. Acting? Sounds like maybe Seafarer, A Catered Affair, Bronx Tale also have a lot to offer. In the Heights looks real good too! Xandu possibly for it's OBCA? It has a lot of beautiful songs in the show.
Both of the shows you mentioned may win something but I just don't see anything yet to convince me that they are miles ahead of the competition. If Bart recovers well, (which is even more questionable now unfortunately), he may win a nomination at least? Andrea Martin may have a nomination but again, up against a lot of good female actress'. Maybe Sierra and Sheri but again, the competition looks like it will be solid. A lot will depend on what they ended up doing with Sheri's part in the show. I believe she will get some fierce competition in the Best Supporting Actress category.

This is my guess between the two titans:
Lighting; Though they could easily tie, Young Fraknenstein
Sets; Once again, a tie, but Young Frankenstein will come on top simply because of it's scale
Costumes; It would seem Mermaid is out of question
Book: Young Frankenstein, without a question
Score: Perhaps Little Mermaid?
Direction: Tie, with Susan Winning'
Acting: From Little Mermaid, we'll most likely have Sierra and Sherri, maybe Tituss. From YF, we have Christopher F, Andrea Martin, Sutton, and Megan, all of which will be featured save maybe Sutton, Megan and Sierra. For leading actress, Sierra takes the prize, she's just that amazing. for featured, I'd like to say Sherri, but Andrea, Sutton, or Megan could easily take this category. Featured Actor, Igor would have to take home the prize.
Musical: I'm not quite sure which one should win. Maybe Xanadu...

Neither show will be a critical success. And their commercial prospects in the long run are dicey as well. I know LM has a built-in audience, but I think it's gonna be another Tarzan.
YF will be largely forgotten once it's "next big thing" patina wears off by next year.
They will probably both get some technical noms, and maybe some acting noms for YF.
TLM will no way get a nom for Best Muscial.

Young Frankenstein is grossing upwards of $1 mil/wk.
By the way...this thread is the blind leading the blind.

Variety has been reporting that YF is taking in approx $200K per show ($1.4 million for a 7 show week last week), so just in terms of box office, it's the top on Broadway.
For best critical response, I wouldn't look at either of those and wait until PASSING STRANGE opens in February (which got across the board raves Off-Broadway at The Public) or consider one of the non-musical offerings (Stoppard's ROCK 'N ROLL just got a very impressive slate of reviews this morning; AUGUST:OSAGE COUNTY and THE SEAFARER promise to do well with the critics) or maybe one of the revivals (SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE should do very well critically).

tazber, I haven't seen TLM yet, so I can't comment on quality, but it's definitely no Tarzan. Tarzan ticket sales took a hit once people saw the show.
Multiple sources (and no, not those 5 people who signed up for BWW accounts on the same day to comment on TLM's sales) have mentioned that demand has gotten a lot stronger for TLM tickets after word came out of the first preview.

Posted: 11/5/07 at 11:57amI'm sure I'm naive, but how does Variety know how much YF is making per week, if the producers are not announcing it?

Posted: 11/5/07 at 12:04pmI was commenting on box office and reviews, not the Tonys. I will not be seeing YF or Mermaid until the first week of December so can't comment on individual performances or design elements. It's not difficult to guess that the shows with the names Disney and Mel Brooks on the marquee are the ones that are going to make the most money. If all it took was great reviews, Xanadu would be sold out for months in advance. But going based off of reviews by posters on this board, it's not likely that YF or Mermaid are going to get raves across the board.

Posted: 11/5/07 at 1:11pmI agree, how does Variety know how much YF is making? If YF were doing so well, I think they'd want to tell the world that "HEY! WE BEAT WICKED!" (please please please correct me if my logic is flawed)

"The trade paper Variety estimated that the box office take for Young Frankenstein the week of Oct. 15-21 was "somewhere in the area of $1.5 million" for seven performances.
The Mel Brooks-Thomas Meehan musical comedy based on the smash film comedy by Brooks began previews at Broadway's Hilton Theatre Oct. 11. Variety estimated the first preview weekend took in around $857,000 for four performances Oct. 11-14.
Variety arrives at its estimate through "a combination of digging and number-crunching."
As previously reported, the show's producers, led by Robert F.X. Sillerman and Brooks, broke with Broadway tradition and decided they will not disclose their weekly box-office grosses and attendance figures.
"This is a private transaction," Sillerman told The New York Times. "…Consequently, I don't know if there's any — I'm quite sure there's not any — bona fide business reason to do it other than bragging rights."

It shouldn't be that hard to figure out a ballpark. They know how many seats are offered at each price (via ticket brokers) and it isn't that hard to talk to people who work at the theater to get an idea of how full the house is (especially when you're only counting 10-20 empty seats, if any) for each night of the week.

For a moment, I thought this said:
Merman Vs. Frankenstein
One could only hope. And we ALL know who would win that match.
