Also, I like Meryl, and I admit that she is a great actress, but why does everyone come to the general consensus that if she's in it, it will be gold? Could she have saved "Basic Instinct 2" if she was in it?
Thing is, Meryl Streep wouldn't have done BASIC INSTINCT 2. She is very careful when she chooses a project. She has been wrong of course, I mean, REDEMPTION and LION FOR THE LAMBS were slashed by the critics this past year (though I read great reviews for her in those movies from critics who hated the films themselves).
I consider her to be American royalty and so whatever she endorses deserves to at least be looked at. It's not like she could be in I KNOW WHO KILLED ME and all of the sudden make it good, it's the fact that she would have never even thought of being part of the movie itself.
Re her part in MAMMA MIA, she loves the show, hence why she decided to take the role of Donna. I think it is a shame that she hasn't done a movie musical before (though she sings in a bunch of movies) but it's great that we'll finally get one. Can't wait to have Meryl Streep singing a bunch of ABBA songs on my iPod.
Now she needs to send her kid off to college and make her long-awaited Broadway comeback.

"Re her part in MAMMA MIA, she loves the show, hence why she decided to take the role of Donna".
For some reason your comment reminds me of the scene in "Will & Grace" where Will takes his mother to see "Mamma Mia" and she loved it, but she hated "Les Mis" because the poor shouldn't sing.

I love Michelle as an actress and I normally like her singing. I thought she was great in Hairspray and loved her song in The Prince of Egypt (I've never seen The Fabulous Baker Boys)But these clips were atrocious. I thought her voice sounded weak and thin and gave no indication that she could have delivered a better performance than Madonna. For the most part they were simply unimpressive, but the end of "I'd Be Surprisingly Good For You" from "There is no one, no one at all..." to the end in cringe inducing. I shutter to think what of what kind of warbling atrocities she would have delivered in New Argentina. I Love Michelle but this was not her role thank god it never came to be.
On the other hand I would have loved to hear/see what Meryl could do in the role

Oh for crying out loud
Madonna was born to play that role, she put more heart and soul in to that role than anyone could have imagined, so much so it won her the golden globe award for best actress in a comedy or musical.
She played it brilliantly and gave herself over to the role 100 percent.Michelle P would have been awful, not only can she not sing but her face is just wrong for the role, shes a woman who has constantly look harsh and aged in my opinion.
As for streep, are you kidding me, Madonna only just pulled off the early part of the film playing a teenager, but streep....REALLY??
I think far to many people on here bash Madonna for the sake of her been Madonna. An artist that America built up and the moment she moved out of the country tried (unsuccessfully) to knock down.

One of the biggest disappointments of my life was the casting of Madonna in my dream role of EVITA. As the Post so hilariously stated.... "NO, SHE CAN'T ACT"
I'm pretty sure that was when she was in "Speed the Plow."

It was. And Frank Rich liked her in it. Just shows that no opinion is unanimous.

Well, I believe when Streep was supposed to play the role, she was about the same age that Madonna was when EVITA was filmed.
Either way I always thought they should have used a different Eva for the earlier parts of the movie.
Streep's acting would have been perfection and I so wish I could have hear her sing those songs.

Yeah, Michelle doesn't have the vocals for Evita. Her "I'd Be Surprisingly Good for You" is especially painful.
I didn't like her vocals in Hairspray, either.
