Perhaps they were Spalding Gray fans who were upset that Mr. Daisey seems to copying Gray's style of performance directly.

Posted: 4/23/07 at 3:32pmI must agree that there are too many oddities to not at least question the reality of it. Why did the houselights come up? That's the most compelling oddity. Safety reasons? The stage manager was that quick? And, okay, they're walking out - teachers and students. Why then would one of them walk UP on stage and pour the water? And why wouldn't someone from backstage come out to deal with that? And furthermore, if Daisey is sitting there and sees someone coming up on the stage, would he not stand up and back up? Watching the video the first time, yes, it all seems real. Playing it back subsequent times, not so sure.

Since nobody has ever heard of this individual, it all couldn't matter less.

If you go to Daisey's site today, you see the updated story, including his blog regarding following up with two representatives from the group (including the guy who poured the water), as well as how everything affected him the next night as a performer.
I find this story fascinating. A true meter of the current culture. Every person has a different line about what is "appropriate". And we as a society are quickly and haphazardly setting boundaries, as with Don Imus, or not, as with anonymous internet postings, as to how we will tell people when and where they can express unpopular opinions.
I personally think Daisey is handling this incredibly well.

I can't believe not a single student did that, especially if they were arts students, were they? That wasn't clear.

I've thought about the whole house lights issue too. Since this happened I've been asking myself what I would have done if I was calling a show and suddenly a third of the audience got up and walked out. I think if I didn't have an indication of their reasons, I might have brought the house lights up to at least a glow for safety -- I mean why the hell would a third of the audience suddenly jump up and leave? A fire? Some other kind of impending danger?
But in a theatre that size, I suspect the booth may have been open to the house, and perhaps there was some chatter indicating that they were uncomfortable with the material. If I knew the reason they were leaving, I'd never bring up the house lights. Let them find their own way out.
