I wish I could have seen more Audrey's! I was struck by Tammy Blanchard's naturalistic, even nihilistic, performance. It took a moment to adjust but I found it was especially well off-set by Jeremy Jordan's classic, and terrific, musical comedy performance. Honestly? Sounds great. I hope we are never able to forget how we got here and the damage wrought. I hope he demolishes it and builds a big, golden palace with his name on every inch. This is who we are now. We shouldn't be allowed to forget.

I thought the unconventional structure of the show was it's strength. It's a concept musical, not a linear story. The Lady Chablis and the old murderer were twin suns rotating around Savanah. One takes the path of outsider, being true to themselves but more or less being rejected by polite society. The other "blends" in and plays the game of Savanah. Both are queer outsiders but approach their integration to society differently. The main character is Savanah. I thought the show said something...

I would avoid extreme sides for this show. The set creates terrible sight lines from the extreme sides. Everything is mostly staged front and center but I would try to select as closer to the center unless I was further back.

There are so many problems with present day audiences that if the only thing bothering you is what someone is wearing... honestly count yourself lucky. For the record... the brim of a baseball cap CAN obstruct a view so it's not ridiculous to ask someone to take it off... but to worry about someone breaking an outdated fashion rule... really we have nothing else to worry about?

Everything I've seen written by him has felt generic. Not at all bad. Fat Ham, especially, is a marvelous showcase for talented actors... there's some great parts in a few of his other shows. But. Most of what he's written feel like great ideas or concepts that are executed blandly and without surprise. I know he directs and I'd love to see him bring his ideas to texts written by others. His ideas, to me, are often really exciting.

Joining the chorus of the bummed. The closing has been obvious for a bit but it's still frustrating. As noted above, I'm not sure why they didn't try... anything else? It's true that the two leads are quite demanding and probably hard to replace but why wasn't Viola cast with a rotating assortment of gay icons? At Steppenwolf, Purpose was unfinished and well into the run actors were holding scripts and calling for lines. Steppenwolf needs Laurie Metcalf a good deal more than Laurie Metcalf needs Steppenwolf. Like. By a lot. Steppenwolf has been artistically adrift since the last few years of the Shapiro administration.Additionally, Laurie Metcalf is an original member. Burning that bridge would hurt the long term legacy of the company in a way that I think would be difficult to recover from.

Usually cuts like this are to prevent overtime pay and to make things smoother on the road. This is playing subscription houses and those kinds of patrons might be less interested in longer, more shaggy show. While I agree that cuts could have been made and likely gone unnoticed, the length of the show was an important part of the show experience for me.

"i wouldn’t assume this version will be anything like what you’re familiar with."The musical is VERY similar to the play except for the singing, obviously. This production sounds like it deviates from the original play quite a bit more than the musical does.

This show was lame in Chicago but it wasn't terrible. The issue was clearly the book and a lack of memorable songs. There was a song and a half that were sort of embarrassing but everything else was bland but nice. The songs didn't really propel the story and many of them did not feel like they were in the right place. It's astonishing folks can work for so long on something, spend so much money, and make so many changes and still end up in the same place they started.

That's a good point! I hope that's true. I find I'm never very good at predicting who will and who won't be a draw. I thought that American Buffalo woulda drawn a crowd and obviously I was very wrong about that.
