Anyone else excited about this show? I think the commercial makes it look awesome... reminds me of Jersey Boys and Walk The Line.
Watch the clip.

Anyone know how the lottery has been for this show? Thinking of giving it a try.

^ I hear the lottery isn't even a challenge. You just show up and get tickets.

M. Spouzic: I saw it and will be happy to give you my take on it. We were sitting in spit territory (2nd row from stage). I could smell the grease paint, see the fake smoke, watch the fingers flying over the guitar strings, and could see the tiny microphone wires that went up through the hair and down the guys necks. Heaven! I love the theatre! I felt that I was sitting right there in the Sun Recording Studio listening to the "greats".
In my opinion, the strength of the show is in its music, but the book had some interesting facts that I did not know and it was well-acted. Four of the actors are superb musicians and they can all sing. Lance Guest, as Johnny Cash, was my favorite and blew me away. He has a beautiful baritone voice. Levi Kreis as Jerry Lee Lewis, was all over that piano doing wonderful JLL acrobats and he is actually playing the piano himself. He is excellent! Eddie Clendening, as Elvis, had the moves down and Robert Britton Lyons, as Carl Perkins, gives a solid performance. He is an excellent guitarist, as well. Hunter Foster, as Sam Phillips, and Elizabeth Stanley, as Dyanne - Elvis's girlfriend are also right there! Elizabeth Stanley has several songs and she is quite engaging.
The audience went wild at the end. The songs span rock and roll, country, R&B and gospel - hits like "Great Balls of Fire", "Folsom Prison Blues", "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On", Sixteen Tons", "I Walk the Line", "Blue Suede Shoes", "Ghost Riders in the Sky", etc. There are more and I just can't remember them all.
Anyone who appreciates these songs will enjoy this show. They are performed beautifully. I go the theatre to be entertained. I was marvelously entertained.

The excerpt at last year's Tonys made me want to stay away.
Saw it yesterday thanks to comps and was upset that I wasted my hour and forty minutes (where nothing happens, might I add). Had I paid to see this I would have been even more pissed than I already am about wasting a lovely afternoon watching this mediocre bore where Hunter Foster is completely wasted.

Thanks for the review MetroLady. Definitely seems like crowd pleasing music with a solid cast.

I loved it. I can't wait to see it again! It's so impressive because they're the orchestra. They create the music themselves. I felt it was a tad bit too short. It might definitely be a show for the "Jersey Boys" crowd and not theatre geeks. Also, parents and grandparents would like it. I took my dad and he still talks about it hahahaha.
Looks horrible and I too keep forgetting this is happening.

I hated this commercial and the entire marketing campaign. Does anyone else think it is strange that they use this tag line about being "based on the actual event" when people rarely know what the event is? I did have a friend see it, and said that the last 20 minutes are really outstanding though.
I LOVE Jersey Boys but hated this crap. There was no story and I don't know why it's on Broadway.
This material is just bad. It's book is so inexcusable that it overrides any redeeming qualities the show might possess (not that I sensed any, when I saw the show in Chicago).

I only want to see this show when Victoria Matlock is on.

The female character only sings two songs.
In real life, Elvis' girlfriend apparently was a dancer and not really a singer.

The show stinks. Yes, the music is crowd-pleasing, and some of the numbers are delightful. Too bad they're sandwiched into one of the worst books I've ever encountered, and half the time a song begins to work its magic, Hunter Foster's character pops in to share some backstory. She's not my favorite performer ever, but the only person to escape from this unscathed is Elizabeth Stanley who smolders on "Fever" and is the only person who comes within a mile of creating an actual character (impressive since she has the least to do).

I saw it in Chicago and thought it was a fun revue, but nothing more. I was shocked when I saw it was going to Broadway, and even more surprised that they kept all 4 of the quartet. Except for Levi Kreis, I thought the perfs were leaden. Truly, this is the nadir for the devolution of the Broadway musical (even spoken as one who really loves this era of music!)
I sincerely hope it's the jukebox musical to end all jukebox musicals.
