Hi everyone!
I work at a University costume shop and we need to recreate the blue pants Mimi wears in "Out Tonight" in RENT. I am looking for advice on where to get fabric and what kind to get, any patterns that might be useful, and any other details or tidbits you could provide me with to make the pants as authentic as possible. Thanks so much in advance!
Good luck with that. The actual show ran out of the fabric a few years ago, so Mimi no longer has her blue pants.
Is that really true? I wondered why I didn't see them in recent pictures...

Indeed that is not true. I actually just saw the show for my first time on Broadway this past Saturday (Amazing!) and Mimi was definately wearing her blue pants.
Yes it is true.. The fabric for the mimi pants is no longer available so there is a new fabric being used. Any future Mimi's will be wearing the new pants that are the same style and pattern only the fabric is a lighter blue and about 3000x more glittery/sparkely.. so much that they border on distracting.

:) Consider me humbled. I took the previous post to mean that the pants had been removed from the show completely, not that the fabric had been changed. That said, does anyone know just was sort of fabric it is? Obviously something blue, shiny and sparkly, but is it vinyl or spandex or something else, and where can I buy it? And what about the size of the pants themselves - are they cropped just below the knee, or full (ankle) length, or a full bodysuit like I read somewhere? Thanks!

The original pants came from Daphne, they didn't make the first pair for the show. I'm not sure where she got them from though.

The pants hit just below the knee usually and have a black dip front waist band that is about 2 inches thick would be my guess. I'm not sure exactly what type of fabric it is, but if I had to guess I would say a vinyl/neoprene type fabric.
I'd kill to have a pair of those blue pants, but I'm not too sure where I'd wear them...

I just found a pair of blue patent leather boots that are just the right color. Why oh why couldn't they be pants?

I was always under the impression that it was actually the NYTW oufit that was Daphne's... Not the blue pants.
Jennifer Beals Body Double wore those "blue pants" in Flashdance during her club dancing scene... random

"I'd kill to have a pair of those blue pants, but I'm not too sure where I'd wear them... " Me too. I love them.
JHartnow actualyl posted something about this around the time the movie was coming out. The fabric for the pants had to be shipped in from somewhere in Europe, if my memort serves me correctly. I'm sure you can find his posts with a simple search. Good luck!!
Holographic lurex. I've re-posted this so many times, I don't even have to bother looking up his posts. It's imported for $400 a yard from Italy.

Spandex house on 38th street i think in midtown new york. Try there.
Look on the Project Runway website.. they have a bunch of stores on there in which the designers went to in midtown to get various fabrics.
I just got these shorts that look almost exactly like the Mimi pants, except shorter. They're made out of nylon and lycra. I'm still trying to find pants though. Just look around dance clothing stores near you, or maybe some vintage stores even. Hope that helps.
I have no idea what they're made out of, but it looks like rubber to me.
I'd think some kind of spandex.
They might have some new pictures on forget-regret.net.
I've been looking for a coat that resembles the one Mark wears in the stage version for almost four years now... no luck.

^That is the phone number. Give it a try. Also you might want to do some calling around...maybe to the Nederlander? Or you could email them but I think calling is better. I wonder if they could help you.
