"I Dreamed A Dream" is... wait scratch that. "I'd Give My Life For You" is happy? Those are happy songs?
I hate it when someone sings 'Send In The Clowns' dressed as a clown!
LMAO. I've never seen that, but I'm sure I'd find it ridiculous.
Relatedly, it took me a while to figure out what the hell was going on in "The Miller's Son". I mean, not only did I not know what it was about, I didn't even know what was going on or what she was saying or anything. And then one day it sort of fell into my head. Of course, this was years and years ago, before I knew anything about the show and was just a fan of the score. Which. Knowing the show always helps.
Ditto on "The Miller's Son."
And I had no idea what the meaning of "What I did for Love" meant. Makes that song ten times more interesting.
For misunderstood songs, I think I would go with "Caberet" like others on this form, as well as throwing in "being alive" Many people take "Being Alive" as Bobby accepting marriage as a good thing in life (sondheim himself thought the ending was a "cop-out") but really it is just Bobby realizing not that marriage is good, but just that it is slightly better than the alternative. In other words, he is choosing the lesser of two evils.
For me, "On My Own" came to mind when I read the post's title. I think "Love Changes Everything" could also fall into this category.

How does one misinterpret "On My Own"? What did you think it meant? Updated On: 3/29/06 at 12:40 AM
Well I thought it was Eponine expressing her frustration at the situation and then sinking into her dream world of love with Marius and then coming out of it at the end, and I once saw it turned into some sort of sisterhood/"strong woman/gospel song that I found really off-putting. Maybe that's just me, but I really thought they messed that song up
