I saw the National Tour of Miss Saigon about 2 and a half weeks ago, and thought that it was absolutely PHENOMENAL!!!! I know that Les Mis definitly has more memorable songs, and in all respects is the better show, but I think that after seeing Miss Saigon I have come to realize that it's story as well as the characters are more real and easier to believe. I think that both shows are amazing, and if you have seen both of them, it is very interesting to compare them together!!! What does everyone think?

How would everyone compare the two, and what do you like about one that you may not like about the other? What do you think are some of their similarities? What is your favorite song from Les Mis, and your favorite song from Miss Saigon?

The problem I had with it was the main song was little more then a take off on an old, old melody/folk song called "Hang Down Your Head, Tom Doolly". (Not sure I spelled that right). Not many would catch that, I expect.
Story was OK. Glad I saw it once. Once was enough.

I love Miss Saigon. I also love Les Miz.
I saw TUTS' production (first one after Broadway). It was done in the round (aka--didn't rely on spectacle). This showed what I had always suspected--that the story and the writing are truly good. It doesn't need a helicopter to be worth anything--sure the helicopter was fun in the Broadway and touring productions. I love the music--although I should admit that at first, I didn't like the music that much. It took a few times through the recording to get into it--and each time I did, I liked it more and more to the point that I can't imagine how I heard those songs the first time. I suspect that this could be the reason why some are turned off my it, whereas Les Miz is much easier to get into musically.
My fav recordings of both are the synphonic recordings. I love hearing every note of both shows.
I also, really like (most of) Martin Guerre--the 1999 cast recording (not so much the OLC). It's a shame that it didn't get figured out. Maybe one day? When are they going to write a new show?

" The problem I had with it was the main song..."
What song would that be?

I loved the Newly vamped and directed National Tour of Saigon. Jennifer Hubilla was awesome as Kim. The Engineer was great too!
and yah, what is the title song of Saigon??
I think the song in question is 'The Heat Is On In Saigon' which is a pretty straight knock-off of something, although I'm drawing a blank as to what specifically. I don't think it was intentional, though, just one of those things.

hummm, I don't think that constitutes as the title song, but ok, I know where you're going by saying it sounds like something else.
It's just the one song from that show I know has been noted as sounding very similar to something else.
I wouldn't call it the title track, either.

As with most things, you have to REALLY make an impression for me to remember you, a story name, a song title, the name of an actor/actress etc. Miss Saigon didn't make enough of an impression on me to remember any of the words or titles to any of the songs. I just remember sitting there thinking, "That's Tom Doolly!"
Sorry.
