Do they offer good food? Is it in a safe neighborhood? I'd like to eat there while in the city this weekend.
It's a diner, so of course...the food is AWESOME! Perfectly safe to walk to from anywhere in that area, especially at sundown and dusk. Reservations ARE required, though they've since given up that 'jacket & tie' policy ala "21".

Safe neighborhood? LOL!!! YES!!! It's on 6th Avenue north of Canal!
How does one get there from Columbus Circle? Thanks!
Takr the Number 1 to Canal, it's one block East.
I ate there years ago. The food is fine, though the diner did look a little scummy.
The are is delightful.
When is it closing? I'd like to go at some point.
I guess you have to see the "cylindrical stools," right?
Yah.
Going there is one of those things I've always meant to do but never actually got around to doing. Whoops.
Below is a link to the news of it's closing.
News on Moondance Diner's closing...
It doesn't list when it's closing--which pisses me off almost as much as the fact that it's closing in the first place, except not really. The latter wins, by a head, shoulders, knees and ankles.

Wow, it's a really sad time for Rent, isn't it. The Moondance Diner is closing AND Frenchie is leaving the cast. Wow!
im glad i ate there last time i was in town...though not very good....and pretty ghetto. haha
i ate there from time to time in the '90s, before larson hit it big with rent.
it's going to be sad to see it go.
Haha Emcee, me too. I've always wanted to, but I never seemed to be near there at the right time.
Hmm. Would it be stupid to bother protesting? I mean, even if it doesn't do anything, just to show them that some New Yorkers won't take the destruction of culture lying down?
This is devastating to me. I ate there when I was a kid with my Mother, not to forget the obvious Jonathan Larson connection. It is a Landmark. I woud think that someone would buy it. I think it's even been in several movies although the only one that comes to mind is Spiderman. I wish that I had gone there on my last trip to New York.
This is so depressing. It's in a fine area, and they have pretty much the best hot chocolate in the sity. I don't know why- but they just do. It is sort of a landmark to the Broadway and entertainment communities as well. It was featured in Spiderman and a few other films as well, though their names escape me. I am truely sad to see this go.
Does anyone know a general time for when it's supposed to close, like what month? Would you expect it to still be open in July?

This is really sad news. I'm just glad that I'm going to NYC in about a week and a half, so I might get to eat there before it's gone. Not really because Jonathan Larson worked there, but because Monica Geller did.
