Posted: 4/30/05 at 2:48amAdd Donna Lynn Champlin to the upcoming cast of SWEENEY. She'll be playing Pirelli/Fogg (yes the role was cast with a female in London). Her instruments will be accordian and piano.

Are you serious? That's going to be freaking awesome!
I love Champlin, she is very versitile and underated (Her work in First Lady Suite was beyond amazing;she stole the show and she was completely wasted in Harold and Maude). I've always thought that role could work as a woman. Congrats to Donna!

Posted: 4/30/05 at 10:59amThe more I hear about this production, the more I feel that it's really only intended for people who have already seen the show done in its more traditional form and already know the show very well (like myself). Although I'm glad that "Sweeney" is getting a revival, I hope people don't see the production and think that this is how it's supposed to be done.

I think the point is, is that it isn't supposed to be done any certain way. They aren't changing the text or the music, but instead, using the text and music to lead them to discover new things about the show.
I don't think any production of Sweeney, traditional or non, willll sit well with a lot of people. It is very intense, not very listener friendly, and extremely different than what most people think musical theatre is.
I applaud this new production, and it's goal of telling this story in a scary, abstract, and completely artistic way.
