Actually no, I don't agree at all. I can understand how someone might perceive Wicked or Hairspray as overrated, although I don't, but I don't see how someone could even consider Ave. Q overrated. I wish you would give some sort of reason to back up your opinions.

Hmmm...I don't agree either.

In my opinion the "most overrated show I ever saw" award has to go to Mamma Mia!

LOL. I thought this thread looked familiar, and I realized it's because I started it. :)

But since we're rehashing this, I say Miss Saigon. Feh.

Well, I agree about Wicked. I don't think it's a bad show. Heck, I'd even say I really enjoyed it. But it's overrated in the sense that it's not the theatrical equivalent of the invention of sliced bread. There are a lot of plot flaws, stupid lyrics and under-developed characters. Entertaining? Yes. Good cast? Yes. The BEST MUSICAL EVER AND EVER AND I LOVE IDINA AND KRISTEN 4EVER!!!!!!?

No.

Though I liked the show and enjoyed watching, I found "The Producers" overhyped and somewhat overrated.

For me it's a tie between "Mamma Mia" and "The Lion King."

"CATS!!!" (I loath thee)
"The Producers" (see it once, that's all you need)

I really don't think "Avenue Q" is overrated. It was such a sleeper hit before the Tony's. It didn't need big Broadway names or the Tonys to boost its fanbase.

Oh, The Q, I love you! ::hugs himself out of Q joy!::

I'll agree with lion king, and wicked to an extent.

I also think phantom of the opera, although it is a good musical, has recieved far too much praise over the years.

re: Most Overrated Shows#17

The Producers, a little bit. It's great but no the perfect masterpiece it was hailed as when it started out.

The Phantom of the Opera- ugh. I just despised it. Same with Rent, which is even worse because it won the Pulitzer.

I also think Wicked's entertainment value is overrated. The score and pointlessness of so much of the razzle-dazzle took away a lot of the enjoyment I might have gotten from the show. Oh, and the fact that Idina Menzel was in it.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm getting into my flame-retardant pajamas and going to bed. :)

definitely second hairspray AND the producers.

in fact id like to third and fourth hairspray, maybe it was better with the original cast (trust me i do NOT love kerry, but my penny couldnt belt at all), but yea the whole time i watched the show i was kind of like.....and?

I don't agree that Wicked and Hairspray are overrated (I have yet to see Ave Q). I think both were fun and entertaining shows. However, I also had the opportunity to see both prior to the hype and form my own opinion. I thought that the Producers and CATS were both overrated. This could also be because I was one of the last to see The Producers and perhaps had unrealistic expectations.

I definitely agree with Wicked, The Producers and Mamma Mia being highly overrated. Unfortunately Broadway business is now mostly relying upon the taste of the average american tourist. With ticket prices being so high, people seem to want to pay to see spectacle instead of substance. All three of those shows are fun and great to look at, but there is just no meat. With a few exceptions, the script and score of Wicked is dreadful. I think people are transfixed by the spectacle, hipe and great performances (of crappy material) that they don't seem to care. The Producers and Mamma Mia are just plain fluff. I'm not saying that there isn't a place for these musicals because they certainly appeal to a wide range of the paying audience. I am just saying that they are highly overrated and it is sad that other shows with so much more substance and artistic merit often get pushed to the wayside or don't last for whatever reason (ie...many of the straight plays, Caroline or Change, Assassins, etc.)

Sometimes people don't pay for meat. They just want fluffy fun. It is what I expected at Mamma Mia and I had a blast. I've seen it three times and will probably go see it again. No one has ever claimed Mamma Mia was anything more than fun fluff, so it really can't be "overrated". It's just popular.

Oklahoma - there's not a more boring show out there...hands down...this one takes the cake. I'm sure in its day it was brilliant, but it aint that day no more...the characters are boring and the score is disgustingly unimaginative.
