I have to go with the minority here and add in a vote for Idina. All her characters have some sort of flamboyance and/or strength to them, but they are still very different.

I'd say Matt Morrison was pretty versatile in his roles. If we're talking versatiality, I wouldn't count Norbert because of Jamie/Freddie, I mean I think they're both relatively close to each other. I haven't seen/heard him in anything else, but it sounded like his part in Thou Shalt Not was more of a stretch.
I would say Raul is very versatile. Going from TickTickBoom to Taboo to Chitty is pretty crazy, but he pulled it off.

Raúl did a few more in-between, but just the jump from The Normal Heart straight to Chitty was drastic enough.

I'm saying Norbert. This guy is classically trained - doing Shakespeare, etc. He then went to do RENT (of all shows) playing and edgy Kurt Cobain-ish rocker. Then, he did CABARET as the Emcee. Sort of in the same edgy/gritty department but the role has such a daunting intensity. He later did L5Y which I think he a milestone in his career. When he sings "Nobody needs to know" it rips my heart to pieces. In fact, the whole piece shows his range from optimistic to experienced and worn down. All you WICKED haters can die and go to hell as I mention the show by saying he is a successful and extremely sexy leading mean, even if the role is limited. And DRS...well, comic brilliance.

I would vote for Cherry Jones. From the earthy, rough talking Josie Hogan (A Moon for the Misbegotten) to the witty, literate Mary McCarthy (Imaginary Friends) to the imperious, unrelenting Sister Aloysius (Doubt), Cherry Jones nails every role and amazingly transforms herself into that character in one flawless performance after another. I once heard her do a reading from The Grapes of Wrath, and even that had me completely entranced. The way she modulated her voice for the different characters from the book was brilliant.

I'll add Cherry Jones. WOW! That transformation for her role in DOUBT. Totally different person. It's hard to believe that only a few years ago she played the title role in MAJOR BARBARA.

ooo...and kudos to Cherry Jones as well (how could you guys leave out her Tony-winning role in The Heiress??)
I also think Mandy Patinkin is a very versatile and engaging actor. Imagining him as both Che and Archibald is a baffling transition in my mind.

I'm glad I'm not the first to say Menzel, as she's proven herself to be quite a versatile actress. Just seeing her be the wife willing to die to please her husband one moment, then the wife cheating on him and yelling to kill him the next in See What I Wanna See was enough to prove that she can jump from one end of the spectrum to the other in a heartbeat. Of course within that show she was also the drastically different Kesa and Deanna as well. Three characters of entirely different worlds, basically.
Then of course you have Maureen Johnson, Kate in The Wild Party, Dorothy in Summer of '42, and Elphaba in Wicked. Very wide range of stuff.
Sarah Uriate Berry, Raul Esparza, and Norbert leo Butz are all very versatile as well.
