Okay, what is the song from a broadway show that almost anyone who hears it, even people who have never stepped in a theater, would know?

I vote probably Summer Nights from Grease because it's done so much at Karaoke bars.

Some Enchanted Evening (i think everyone's heard this song...)
Oooooooooooklahoma.. (same applies here)

All the old standards (some of which even I was surprised to find out are from musicals):

My Funny Valentine
The Lady is a Tramp
There's No Business like Show Business
Luck Be a Lady
Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered
They Can't Take That Away From Me

Also:

Send In The Clowns
Age of Aquarius
Somewhere Over the Rainbow

There are many, many more. It's only recently that Broadway music hasn't become more popular with the masses.

I highly doubt that Lots Wife will become a household standard.

I don't think that Diana DiGarmo's version (or the one from TBFO) will ever make Melissa Manchester's hit a household standard either.

Well, with Chicago being one of the highest-grossing movies of all-time, I think maybe All That Jazz would be pretty recognizable.

I also thnk people will know "And I am telling you" -- it has been odne a few times on American Idol.

Besides that, I concur that the movie-musicals tend to have the songs more people know.

I love "On My Own" but a lot of my friends didn't know it when a friend sang it at a recital. If we're going with musicals, not specifically Broadway, I'd say "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" from Meet Me in St. Louis. It's a Christmas standard that almost everyone of every age knows. "Tomorrow" is also known by a lot of people.
