No it is not a Broadway showtune, but the original post asked for most recognizable song from a MUSICAL. Which is OZ.

So I agree 100% that "Over The Rainbow" is the most recognizable. Every teenager that I went up to in my school (excluding drama kids) would never have heard of more then half of the musicals mentioned, but you can bet your lucky stars they have see The Wizard of Oz.

But still, it's not most recognizable WORLDWIDE. My boyfriend in high school was from Nigeria and had never even heard of The Wizard of Oz. (I was so shocked that he had never seen one of my all-time favorite movies that I gave him my copy that night and told him to not call me until he watched it.)

Even though I hate to admit it I think that no-one hearing "THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA" will have any doubt that it comes from the musical of the same name so it gets my vote.

Well, since I started the thread, I have to say that I meant a song from a STAGE musical. But since so many stage musicals translated to the big screen, that's why, many songs that became famous from the movie versions, qualified. But technically, they began on the stage ! I am sorry about the confusion.

whether people can place them or not (or name their source), "recognizable" suggests to me that if one of my buddies is walking through Wal-Mart and overhears the muzack (or whatever company is making canned music these days) and whistles along, we've got a winner.

And in that regard, I'd have to go with Memory.

Enough already....lol....its Memory from Cats..this is not a personal opinion..its pretty much fact considering that Cats has been translated into more languages than any other musical EVER, and that it has grossed more worldwide than any other song from a musical. If you go to Singapore and hum What I did For Love, youll probably get caned. Memory however will at least get you a rice cake.
