What's worse is that I love TSOM and have already listed it as worldwide known, but because I haven't agreed that it is THE most famous currently, I have to be talked to.

Grease is much more recognizable.

I mean, wedding, bar mitzvahs, graduations, sweet 16's, proms, they always play that GREASE MEDLEY.

Grease has been done by every HS from here to Minsk. Well, maybe LA.

BUT, if we are talking globally....maybe OVER THE RAINBOW.

Everyone knows WoO...but I think that song is famous because of the movie.

How about "Everything's Coming Up Roses"? Or perhaps "Getting to Know You"? I would guess that these are rather well known, simply because they've been around for decades and have been used in a variety of contexts, apart from Gypsy and The King and I.

None of my arguments here have been of a personal nature, but I see that a few people on these boards need to grow up.

"snide cow?" "theatre queen?"

A lot of acid here. Be more constructive.

Sumofall, the movie Zorba, was a huge hit in Greece. The theatrical version has never appeared here, to my knowledge! The Zorba theme, by Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis is something like a national anthem, since it symbolises the Greek spirit and was way overplayed at the Olympics !
And I still think that many of you, don't think internationally but in U.S terms ! Very few people have seen Annie in my country and even less know Tomorrow. And as for Grease, I think "You're the One that I want" is the most popular and I am not sure it was on the original theatrical version or written for the movie !

"Oh What a Beautiful Morning"
"There's No Business Like Showbusiness" sung by Ethel Merman
"Tomorrow"
"Somewhere Over the Rainbow"

This is all based on what i remember from the days on the playground, many, many years ago. I was into musicals, but these were the songs i remember other kids knowing.
Well, except "There's No Business Like Showbusiness", that's just something i witnessed most adult-ish people recognized.

I'd think the part of this thread that's throwing people off is the "worldwide" aspect. Many people here know about the cultural impact of these songs in the US, if you've never even experienced the other cultures, how do you know if The Sound of Music or Grease is more popular in like, Romania? And who here has polled sub-Saharan Africa about their knowledge of musical theater?

I think the most recognizable song from a musical in the US would probably be "The Sound of Music" or "Tomorrow".

The songs where I only knew one line
"one...singular sensation"
"who could ask for anything more"

My parents didn't listen to Broadway. I only learned Do-Re-Mi in school when learning scales, but didn't see the Sound of Music until I was 17 and "Annie" (admittedly because of the Albert Finney movie). I liked "Grease" but as kids we overplayed "The Muppet Movie" soundtrack more.

If you really want to help the American theater, don't be an actress, dahling. Be an audience..... Don't be taken in by the guff that critics are killing the theater. Commonly they sin on the side of enthusiasm. Too often they give their blessing to trash... Tallulah Bankhead

i would say, the Phantom of the Opera theme.

Back, he spurred like a madman, shrieking a curse to the sky. With the white road smoking behind him and his rapier brandished high! Blood-red were the spurs i' the golden noon; wine-red was his velvet coat, when they shot him down on the highway, down like a dog on the highway, and he lay in his blood on the highway, with the bunch of lace at his throat... (The Highwayman. Sung by: Loreena McKennitt)

Even though they're not ORIGINALLY from musicals, honestly, some of the jukebox songs have got to be up there -- stuff from Smokey Joe's or All Shook Up or Mamma Mia...

Dancing Queen shouldn't count. It was made popular by Abba decades before someone decided to make a musical based on their music.

Jukebox musical songs are too easy in this classification. Besides, Elvis is probably much more well-known than Abba.

It can almost be proven that its Memory from Cats. Its grossed more money than any other show ever ever around the globe. Funny story: Andrew playd it for his father and asked him, "daddy, what does this sound like to you?", and his father replied "50 million dollars!" Cats has been translated in to more languages than any other show..ever. SO thats probably a good bet.

BY FAR The organ intro to Phantom Of The Opera. You know how many times I have heard that at Weddings and parties, etc. I think in second comes "Tomorrow" from Annie.

I think it just depends maybe on what generation...like ddtruit pointed out. But most recently, probably the Phantom organ. Or still Grease...but I'm not sure how worldwide Grease is.
