I'm supposed to be doing a report on a song and I was just wondering what you all think is the saddest, most depressing, all hope is lost, Broadway song? Thanks for the help you guys!
"The Party's Over" from Bells Are Ringing.
Now, the bitchy part: I hope you use better grammar than "most saddest" in your report.
I was waiting for someone to comment on that....

Till We Reach That Day from Ragtime
My Eyes Adored You and Fallen Angel from Jersey Boys
Look Around and Never Met A Man I Didn't Like from The Will Rogers Follies. Well, they're not really sad but those songs
move me.
I'm Not That Girl and For Good from Wicked
If I Told You from The Wedding Singer
I Never Knew His Name from Brooklyn
Almost A Love Song from Victor/Victoria
Some Things Are Meant To Be from Little Women
It Don't Make Sense from Parade
Without You from Rent
Dividing Day from The Light in the Piazza
Easy To Be Hard from Hair
You Walk With Me from The Full Monty
Black and Blue and Mean to Me from Ain't Misbehavin'
Are You Still Holding My Hand from Bright Lights, Big City
Lot's Wife from Caroline, or Change
What I Did For Love from A Chorus Line
That's about all I got. I looked through my collection and those are the songs that struck me.
To me, "I'll Cover You - Reprise" from Rent always gets me. But I don't know if it'd be as moving if you never saw the visual (play or movie), but I always tear up!

"Send in the Clowns" is a downer as is "Losing My Mind" from Follies, and "This Is What It Is" from The Wild Party

That list was amazing! Thank you so much!!!!
Grey Gardens is new, but I'd say "Winter In A Summer Town"
Most of the songs in The Last Five Years tug at some emotions.
Give 'em a listen.
uhm i think tht come what may from the movie Moulin Rouge...it always gets me when i watch it=]
Something Bad from Wicked!!! Dr. Dillimond's the best!
Please correct the title of this thread. "Most Saddest" - that is double superlative. Just say saddest.
My saddest song is "I'd Give My Life For You" from Miss Saigon.

Til We Reach That Day - Ragtime
At the Glen - Dessa Rose
I would say "Losing My Mind" takes the cake for me.
"Not a Day Goes By" is also up there.
Oh, also that song from Lestat, which I think is called "So Far Yet Just A Breath Away." I hope I got that right. Hugh Panaro sang it very emotionally. Elton John should release the recording. Maybe it will recoup some of his losses from the show.
. . . and "I'm Not That Girl" from Wicked. That line "wishing only wounds the heart" is profoundly sad.

I'M NOT THAT GIRL could never in a million years touch LOSING MY MIND.
LOSING MY MIND definitely takes the cake for me too.

"Not A Day Goes By"-Merrily We Roll Along
"I Have Dreamed"-The King & I
"We Do Not Belong Together"-Sunday in the Park with George
"And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going"-Dreamgirls
"At The Ballet"-A Chorus Line
"It Wasn't Meant to Happen"-cut from Follies
"Losing My Mind"-Follies
"The Story of Lucy and Jessie"/"Ah,But Underneath"-Follies, not typically sad but once you read into them they are very sad.
AlanAntonio - You mean "Right Before My Eyes?"
"A Stranger In This World" - TABOO
"Petrified" - TABOO
The lyrics may not sound sad but the staging and the sequence on when the song was sung made this one the saddest for me - Sun and Moon Reprise - Miss Saigon
The other contenders:
On My Own - Les Miserables
I Dreamed A Dream - Les Miserables
Love Look Away - Flower Drum Song
When October Goes - (can't rem. this Manilow musical project)
I'd Give My Life For You - Miss Saigon
If I Loved You - Carousel
I Don't Care Much - Cabaret
Sacred Bird - Miss Saigon
Little God Of My Heart - Miss Saigon
Finale - Miss Saigon
We Kiss In The Shadow - King and I
Where Is Love? - Oliver!
Lord and Master - King and I
What About Love? - The Color Purple

I would have to add "The I Love You Song" from Spelling Bee as well as "Something Just Broke" from Assassins
"Good Thing Going"--the payoff is heartbreaking: Going, going, gone...
