What's the moment where your jaw just dropped? Avenue Q beating Wicked must surely be one of the biggest upsets, but what about other clashes?
I couldn't believe Marissa Jaret Winokur won over Bernadette Peters...still can't...Nothing against Marissa, she's talented yes, but still.

I thought Marissa would win.
I thought Idina upsetting Tonya and Donna was a much bigger shock.

people boo'd when AQ won - it was so horrible!
My jaw dropped when Wicked lost to Avenue Q, because all the hype was on Wicked and it was "the" show. However, that is terrible that people booed Avenue Q. They deserve a congratulations.
Wow, I don't remember that. That's so unfair. They deserved it. Um, I really wanted Tonya to win, so I was pretty shocked.
Crazy For You winning Best Musical over Falsettos and Jelly's Last Jam was a stunner. Even the Weisslers looked shocked during their acceptance speech.
Another one that really surprised people was Jim Dale (Barnum) winning over Mickey Rooney (Sugar Babies).

The booing must have sounded ungracious. Updated On: 12/28/04 at 10:06 PM

When Marc and Scott declared their love on national television, including a beautiful kiss.
It was shocking because I was not expecting it.
I remember when Best Musical was announced this year. They said "And the winner of the best musical is..." And I started screamign "Wicked!" When the ysaid Avenue Q, I ahd to ask my mom for verification that Avenue Q actually won. I was so shocked. I thought Bernadette Peters would win in 2003 but wasn't that shocked when she didn't.

and they left up the Wicked poster instead of changing it to AQ
The Bernadette Peters loss wasn't so much of a shock because Gypsy opened late in the season and the small number of performances voters could see were during a period when she was in bad health.
The Tony Awards for the 1983-1984 season:
Jerry Herman winning the best score for "La Cage aux Folles" over Stephen Sondheim for "Sunday In The Park With George"
And
Harvey Fierstein winning best book for "La Cage aux Folles" over James Lapine for "Sunday In The Park With George".
Sondheim and Lapine did go on, however, to win the Pulitzer Prize for that show.

The Weisslers may have looked shocked, but it wouldn't have been during their acceptance speech - they produced FALSETTOS, not CRAZY FOR YOU.

I still think that Wicked was robbed, don't see the wow factor with Avenue Q
At the time of the Tony's this year, I hadn't seen "Wicked" or "Ave. Q" but I was rooting for "Wicked." Funny, I read some thing that said usually the show that wins the Outer Cricits Cirle Award and the Drama Desk almost ALWAYS goes on to win the Tony. Odd how that didn't happen for "Wicked." I think the Tony's tried to be off the wall about it, you know? I was sad that Ms. Peters didn't win last year, either. She was much better in her role than the other girl was in "Hairspray."

Although everyone has said this, clearly when Avenue Q beat Wicked. The entire 03-04 award show was messed up.
Neil Simon for Biloxi Blues over As Is, Hurlyburly and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Thanks Rathnait62. Old brain cells are fading.
I just remember two people, a man and a woman, giving the Crazy For You acceptance speech and seeming very bewildered.
Roger Horchow and Elizabeth Williams would have been the bewildered producers that evening, dry.

It should be noted that Avenue Q wasn't eligible for many of these critics' circle awards because it had played off-Broadway the year before.
(Regardless of which show is better, I think Avenue Q's Tony win bodes much better for Broadway's artistic community than had Wicked won; you don't always have to reward the big blockbuster of the season just because it's selling out.)
Actually, a SMALL group of Wicked fans booed from the balcony when Avenue Q won - the sound that was heard in Radio City when Avenue Q won was a huge screaming CHEER. BSoBW2 seems to have left that part out. The house was decidedly PRO-Q - thus, they won. And the reason Wicked won the Drama Desk is that Avenue Q was not eligible because they were eligible for the off-b'way run the year before against Hairspray. So it was not all that shocking.

Anytime someone writes a show as brilliant as "Ragtime" and it doesn't win, I'm in shock.

Obviously Avenue Q winning Best Musical last season.
I too was quite shocked when Bernadette lost to Marissa! Sorry. It's been, what, almost 3 seasons and I'm still pissed about that one. After Bernadette performed "Rose's Turn" and shortly there after lost the Tony, I feel certain many of those Winokur voters had to have been kicking themselves in the rear.
Anddd...
Idina winning this year pleasantly surprised me. I felt certain that it was going to Tonya, because the last few weeks before the ceremony, there was a huge push for her in that category. Menzel was my personal favorite. She won, and I feel rightfully so. This is (soon to be was) her career-defining role.
