Urinetown losing. While I know it was coming and that Millie was going to win, it was a big disappointment for me. I love both musicals but Urinetown deserved that award. And Hunter Foster should have won for best actor!
in 96, i think , when bring in da somthing beat idina, i thought idina was great , amazing in rent...also.. AVE Q BEATING WICKED! no way ! i guess wicked didnt really need it its gonna b there 4 a while..
Since this threat kind of turned into what should/shouldn't have one, here are my opinions on some of the most wretched (more recent) Tony travesties.
1.) THE LION KING loosing best musical to RAGTIME. Completely and utterly uncalled for and shameful.
2.) Mary Stuart Masterson loosing best actress to Jane Krakowski. Both were extraordinary, but Masterson's role required more brilliance and heart - and she truly held that show together. I fell that she was the real star.
3.) Ashley Tuttle from MOVIN' OUT being nominated for best supporting actress, leaving out Laura Benanti for NINE, Jackie Hoffman for HAIRSPRAY, or Kerry Butler for HAIRSPRAY. Clearly, that was a major mistake.
4.) Bernadette losing to MJW - enough said.
5.) TABOO not winning best score. If it had lost to CAROLINE OR CHANGE, that would have been cool. Clearly, TABOO was the best score of last season and was completely screwed.
6.) MILLIE winning over URINETOWN - tragic.
7.) Harvey Fierstein winning over Anotnio Banderas - I just really think that was a huge mistake.
8.) AVENUE Q beating CAROLINE OR CHANGE for best musical. Awful.
9.) Idina Menzel winning the Tony. All other nominees in that category gave superior performances to hers - In my opinion, Tonya Pinkins was the true winner last year.
Harvey shouldn't have won. Also, I knew that Idina was going to win the Tony but most of the nominees were better than her (ie. Kristin Chenoweth)
Kristin Chenoweth's performance was far superior to Idina's, but to me, Tonya Pinkins and Donna Murphy's performances surpassed all of them. Bad attendance or not.
And whoever said that Pinkins had attendance issues? Please.

I don't think Pinkins had attendence issues. I really liked Caroline and it should have won Best Musical and Best Score. However, Donna Murphy deserved Best Actress (I told you MFL and I weer nothign alike!)
I think that Harvey Fierstein beating Brian Stokes Mitchell was a big shocker. Mitchell's performance in Man of La Mancha was brilliant!

Pinkins didn't have attendance issues, and it almost killed her voice. However, while I was sad she didn't win, I wasn't shocked by it- by the time of the ceremony, she and Murphy were seen as the frontrunners, with Menzel as the dark horse, Chenoweth trailing behind, and D'Abruzzo having almost no chance at all. Menzel's win was a bit surprising, but not shocking.
There's a difference between decisions you feel are unjustified and ones that are actually surprising.
I know no one else but me thinks this, but again, since I'm so biased for Cheno, I was really rooting for her for the Tony...I was upset that she didn't win however I'm sure she'll get another chance

When they cut Elaine Stritch's speech and went to a commercial when she won for "At Liberty"... I always wondered what they'd do if someone wouldn't stop talking. My query was answered that night.

Yep I know. I'm just saying I wouldn't mind seeing her win another one.
The funny thing is looking back at the musicals that are surviving that didn't win the Tony for best musical. Mamma Mia from what the charts are saying still seems to be doing pretty well. If I look back correctly it is the only show from the year it was nominated for best musical that is still on Broadway. It will be interesting to see how Wicked and Avenue Q fair. May the best musical win.
First and foremost...
"The Lion King" over "Ragtime".
Others...
Winokur beating Peters.
"Q" beating "Wicked", though well-deserved.
Dennehy beating Izzard.
Fierstein beating Banderas.
Latessa beating Cavanaugh.
Krakowski beating Masterson.
Cerveris over Esparza.
Beatty not getting nominated for "Cat..."
Noni Rose over Keating.
Duncan over Burton.
Ebersole over Prince or Schaffel.
And that's just from the past couple of years...
Winokur over Peters
Menzel over Murphy/ Pinkins (It wasn't shocking, but more...dissapointing)

My mom always tapes the TONYs for me. Most of the time s I remember but when I don't she has a copy ready for me. I love my mom.
When Chita won for The Rink! Happy Shock!
I don't remember booing for AQ but that must have been because I started crying(out of happiness) when AQ was announced.

I was (pleasantly) surprised when Daisy Eagan won for THE SECRET GARDEN. Also when Joanna Gleason won for INTO THE WOODS.
Tonya Pinkins was robbed. Idina was my personal LAST choice of the five nominees, so I was shocked (and disappointed) when she won. She's a powerful vocalist, but an "actress", she is not.
I was shocked that WICKED won any Tony's at all (even technical ones). The show is completely overblown and lacks heart. AVENUE Q was a fine choice, although CAROLINE would have received my vote.

Let's also remember that the reviews for wicked weren't that great...mixed at best, while the Q reviews were, pun intended, golden.
La Cage winning was no shock to me at all. It's a work of art. It was kind of a shocker in the respect that the Tony Board loves modern theatre. Being a huge fan of traditional theatre music, I was elated. The music in La Cage is inspired and wonderful, from the overture to the finale. I only wish Jerry Herman had written more scores, he's really the only one left who can write this type of showtune. Sorry but I am not a Sondheim fan. I like a score I can sing and hum when I leave the theatre. Can't remember anything from Sweeney Todd and I only saw it 2 months ago.
mntwister...
While I agree that SOME of the score for LA CAGE is good (A Little More Mascara, La Cage Aux Folles, Song on the Sand...), the rest is wildly uneven. Masculinity, Anne on My Arm, etc. are instantly forgettable.
I remember leaving the theater after seeing the original LA CAGE (which was terrific), but I was humming "Finishing the Hat."
Just because you can hum a song you hear once in the theater doesn't mean that it's necessarily well written. It just means that it's simple and repetitive (just ask ALW).
That was one of the biggest Tony goofs ever! (Herman beating Sondheim for Best Score.) Oh, another big ol' goof was awarding Gregory Hines the Tony for JELLY'S LAST JAM over Nathan Lane's textbook-perfect portrayal of Nathan Detroit in GUYS & DOLLS. Jelly Roll Morton was a piano player, not a tap dancer!
A bit off subject, as I assume everyone wants to talk about Tony noms/wins/losses, etc. but here goes:
Anthony Quinn announcing the winner before the nominees were announced...
John Napier during his acceptance speech for Les Miserables asking why Starlight Express wasnt nominated (which wouldve given him a second nom in the category...biggest Tony jerk moment that!
