The thread on Brooklyn getting several standing o's during the show made me think of this.
I saw the last Scarlet Pimpernel at the Minskoff. There had to be 10 standing ovations. Every big number had one and a couple of the ad lib lines that the cast added for fun got them.
It was cheesey but a helluva lot of fun.
I guess I became a Pimpie that day.

#3Yes. It was the final show at the Minskoff

Guess I should have pointed that out. The show was closing temporarily.
It later came back after a brief tour at the Neil Simon.
But the current cast (Doug Sills, Rachel York, Rex Smith) were leaving the show and the current run was closing.
So the standing O's were not for a normal show.

Didn't see it, but my old voice teacher mentioned seeing Dreamgirls with Jen Holliday, and he said there was a standing ovation in the middle of tons of the songs, and that peoplke rushed the stage when she started singing "And I Am Telling You."
When do we get another show people are THAT excited by?

Standing O's DURING a show's performance have been pretty rare -- I have only experianced it twice -- Jennifer Holiday in Dreamgirls after I am Telling You and Audra and Brian Stokes in the pre-broadway LA run of Ragtime after Wheel of a Dream...
there have been many times there was lots of applause, but pure standing O's not too many I have seen

Posted: 8/27/04 at 1:34pmI've never seen Standing O's likes these, but during several shows I have gone to, I've stood up multiple times during it and was the only one. It's really embarrassing!

O yeah I forgot to mention this...I wasnt sure if it counted but now I guess it does
The last time I saw Wicked, most of the people (in the orchestra seats anyway) stood up after Defying Gravity and applauded

Posted: 8/27/04 at 1:37pmI heard from people who were there that Anthony Rapp got a 15 minute ovation at the START of the show at his last performance of Rent. There was also a mid show ovation for the killer version of Take Me Or Leave Me that was performed that day.

Posted: 8/27/04 at 1:42pmThe most I've ever seen was at THE NORMAL HEART. The cast ended up coming out at least three or four times the first time I saw the show because no one would sit down or leave.

Posted: 8/27/04 at 1:44pmI think some of us are confused by curtain calls and standing O's -- but that's just me....of course legends coming back and people leaving the show always add a dimension to a performance

Taboo closing night. I lost track when I hit 6 by intermission (there had to be atleast 15 or so)
Urban Cowboy sat after opening. The show was supposed to close that night but because of the audience response that night it stayed opened. (I honestly am not sure the audience ever really sat down much)

After Hugh Jackman's "Once Before I Go" from THE BOY FROM OZ...he stood there for a solid minute after the song for the ovation.

Posted: 8/27/04 at 5:14pmI'm going to ammend what I wrote. The most standing ovations I ever saw was at the final performance of THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW (January 6th, 2002) There was a standing O after almost every single musical number.

I heard from people who were there that Anthony Rapp got a 15 minute ovation at the START of the show at his last performance of Rent. There was also a mid show ovation for the killer version of Take Me Or Leave Me that was performed that day.
I was at Anthony's final show, and the ovation at the top of the show was only a few minutes (a minute or two at most after listening back). Felt like 15 though! Also, I don't remember anyone standing in my section after "Take Me", but I'm sure some people could have been -- that was one of the best performances of that song to date. I've still never been in a more enthusiastic crowd (including Kristin's last in Wicked). Anthony's show was insane - but the crowd always died down when they should have - which was surprising....

The longest standing ovation I can remember was for Bat Boy
AIDA also and
The Boy From Oz seems to only allow about a minute because they know the audience would never stop applauding
