I never saw Movin Out on Broadway (just never felt like spending the money) and, of course, now that the tour just ended I think I'd like to see it. Looking at Ticketmaster, it looks like it's staring up again. Also, I see it's playing for like 2 months at Harrah's in Atlantic City. I thought about taking a weekend down there and seeing it, but it looks to be a 90-minute "casino" version (such bull).
So 2 things:
1. Does anyone know if the subsequest tour will again be the full version? The cities so far suck, but I'm sure they'll add more.
2. Looking at archives of Playbill and Telecharge pages, it look like the original was only 1hr 45 min with intermission, so isn't it basically 90 minutes anyway? Though some sites say 2 1/2 hours.
Any info would be appreciated.

Bump
Made the mistake of posting this before the Tonys and it got buried under the pile of sour grapes. (Hope it still smells okay!)

I dont know if you want to see a Tour of this show.
It featured the Twyla Tharp Dancers who were brilliant. I dont know how they can get such great talent in a road show.
If you love Billy Joel music - its a good show to see- but if you are not a fan of his music - I wouldnt bother - especially the ACity Tour.

The boyfriend is a big Joel fan. We never saw the show here because neither of us cared that much or really had the $$ at the time (dumb, I know).
looking at it, the AC version probably isn't the way to go (though the timing still confuses me) so I guess I'll wait for more cities.

Another thing to think about-
If you are a huge BJ fan - how do you like hearing someone else sing his songs? It really bothered me to hear an inferior singer - it kinda ruined the songs for me. Luckily I love watching Dance - so I still enjoyed it.
If you want more detail on the show - you can pm me too -

Posted: 6/12/07 at 7:36pmI'm a dancer and a Joel fan - so naturally I took the first oppertunity I got to see this show - and let me tell you now, the music was incredible. Who would be your main singer performing if you were to see it?

Posted: 6/12/07 at 7:42pmThe choreography is outstanding, and Billy Joel is awesome, we allready knew that. I thoroughlly enjoyed it, but if you're not a fan of ballet, it will bore you to tears.

Its not really Ballet dancing- its more modern dance.
The way the show is set up - there is a band that sits above the stage that plays the songs - so if you dont like the story thru dance you can watch the band.
My husband enjoyed watching the band and listening to the music. I loved watching the dancers - so it was a win win for us. But I would check to see who is singing the songs and who is doing the dancing before you see it.

it's pure twyla!
is the cast list posted? I'm assuming it's not, hence the discussion of non/union.

Posted: 6/13/07 at 11:58amPersonally, I found Movin' Out to be one of the most moving pieces of theater I've ever experienced. The music and choreography fit perfectly, telling a touching story incredibly well, something I did not expect. I wasn't a Joel fan going in, but I'm now a huge fan. I highly recommend it!

When did they start condensing casino shows? Did Las Vegas start this trend?
I was gonna see Hairspray but part of the reason I didn't was that it was non-equity and the show was condensed for the Atlantic City run and then expanded again for the tour which ruined it....
I heard.

Posted: 6/18/07 at 1:57amJust saw the new Troika production of MOVIN' OUT down at Harrah's in Atlantic City on Saturday night (6/16). Since nobody on the board seems to have seen it yet, figured I would be the first to post about it. The bottom line- it's surprisingly good. Especially since it's a non-Equity production. Dancers are mostly really young, but they are very entertaining and skilled. I think one or two of the more complicated choreographic elements were eliminated and replaced, but overall, it still works. I wanted to find out who the dancers were, but Harrah's didn't provide a program for the show so you basically can't find out unless you wait by the stage door and ask. One smart thing they did was to get one of the Piano Men from the First National Tour to be in this show. Not sure how they managed it, unless maybe he wasn't in Equity and/or was in some other union (musicians, maybe). But he is just great. The band still rocks, but they need to be louder. There were also a few glitches with the sound which definitely need to be worked out. By the way, the show has NOT been shortened. What they did do was eliminate the intermission, so that the show runs straight through. BUT, they added an extra song in the middle ("And So It Goes"), which was beautiful. So actually, the Harrah's version gives you a little more for your money on the music end. The dancers still have a bit of a ways to go before the show could equal the Broadway and 1st National versions (no John Selyas or Ashley Tuttles in this cast quite yet). But give it a month and I'll bet it will be right where it needs to be. THAT'S THE SCOOP!

What is the name of the lead vocalist? Do you remember?
EDIT: nvm, I re-read the post, and saw that they didn't give out programs. Oh well.

Posted: 6/18/07 at 12:20pmOh I saw Matthew Friedman too in Boston too! He was very good, and reminds me more of Billy Joel than the other singer who was on the Equity tour (forget his name).
