Movin' Out#0

Why does this show not grab broadwayworlders attention like Rent, Wicked, Mamma Mia, Phantom etc? It's been running for near three years does consistently good business yet compared to the aforementioned shows seldom gets a mention here. Why not?

MOVIN' Out.

It hardly has such a hardcore fanbase as RENT or Wicked. And Mamma Mia! doesn't exactly get much mention here, either.

Take one look at MAMMA MIA. We've had enough of composer-driven pop shows.

Take the G off of the title and replace it with an apostrophe. It's a MAJOR pet peeve of mine.

Your answer, as far as I can tell, has to do with cast changes. The cast of this show has been fairly unchanging for its entire run, with the exception of Elizabeth's pregnancy, and some other changes. People like talking about casting changes and rumors. These actors are also unlikely to be moving into another Broadway show. This is not a musical, but a rock ballet. How many other rock ballets are on broadway currently?

I hope that answers your question, and I'm serious about the name thing. It's Movin' Out, not Moving Out.

addendum:

gvendo - Movin' Out is nothing like the composer-driven pop drivel that pollutes our stages. It is not Mamma Mia. It is not All Shook Up. It is not Good Vibrations. I take it you haven't seen the show. If you had seen it, you would know that the story is told entirely through dance. This is a dance show. Not a flashy-trash dance show, but a legitimate dance show that utilizes highly-trained professional dancers. This show is outstanding and nothing like anything else currently on broadway. Never compare the work of Twyla Tharp to that of Carrafa. Never do it. Updated On: 7/30/05 at 01:16 AM

Movin' Out, I stand corrected zoran912. I've not seen the show other than a few 'clips', being on the other side of the globe. I love Twya Tharp's work it looks sensational, I guess it just doesn't appeal to the teenage girls who spend so much time talking about the aforementioned shows.

how many other shows can you name that opened with a cast and have that same cast 3 years later?

I do not consider Movin' Out a jukebox musical at all. SO DIFFERENT AND UNIQUE. There is a story being told through music on one level through music and the same story being told through dance on another level. I was lucky to see it with Michael Cavenaugh in Cleveland...he played the tour during the Cleveland run...it is his hometown. The show is hitting Akron next year...I will definitely see it again...oh and the lighting gave me an orgasm.

I went through a Movin' Out phase a couple of years ago. Michael Cavanaugh is so wonderful. I was one of many with a crush on him. Does anyone know if he's still pounding away on the piano? Or has someone else taken over as lead piano man.

Since it's a ballet and not a real MUSICAL in the normal sense, I'm sure it doesn't really connect with many of the people who post HERE. There aren't really divas people can attach themselves to and create gush threads about.

However, it is a FABULOUS ballet and I loved every single minute of it :0) Glad you like it too!!

I sure wouldn't call it a ballet.

I'm so glad that the true nature of this show has been brought to light. I HATE IT when people lump this amazing show in with the Jukeboxers. I hate it.

...you wouldn't call it a ballet? Why wouldn't you? It's very much a rock ballet, if you will, as I see it. How would you categorize the show?

Well, it's not a traditional ballet with traditional music, but it follows the same "dancing out a story" format that ballets do and a lot of the choreography, though not all, is ballet.

It's certainly easier than saying "this show that's kind of like a ballet but has a lot of different kinds of dancing and uses pop music and has a story but no one really has lines and the music is separate from the characters dancing."

I try to simplify my life :0)

Ya, but the choreography style isn't entirely ballet...and a ballet is usually set to classical music, wordless. But like I said, there is a story being told through music on one level through music and the same story being told through dance on another level...and I love it!

EDIT: ya, what you said above. Also, this show is in its very own category...

I'm going to ditto Pinguin on this. She described it perfectly!

Movin' Out is a ballet simply for lack of a better term!

I would call the show a music theatre dance fusion- not exactly catchy- but then some shows defy category. What is Slava's Snow Show? Shockheaded Peter?

There is an artistic vision driving this piece. I love it.

This is one show that could (would) be worthy of a DVD release.

I've seen it twice, and I'm so excited that it's coming back to Boston for a little while this year. I think it should be getting more recognition than it's getting. Mm, a DVD sounds like a great idea. Everything on the Movin' Out CD is so dance-able (for lack of a better word) too.

Is this a show where it really matters if you have a good seat or would you atill appreciate it if you had a cruddy seat?

i would appreciate this show in any seat. i sat in the right orchestra, near the back, and i STILL loved it! i mean, it's not the kind of show that people obbsess over about like wicked or the light in the piazza. it's sophisicated, technical, yet fun and entertaining. it's simply, a show that makes you feel good when you leave the theater.

oh, and michael wasn't there when i saw it. (i saw the matinee show) and all of the leads were out. so, we had understudies for every single lead character. but, it didn't bother me much, because those dancers were still awesome!

excellent, thanks. another question: if you're not a fan of billy joel's or are not familiar with his music, will that mean you enjoy the show less?

well, it depends on what you mean. if you HATE his music all together, then i'm not sure why someone would be interested in seeing the show!

but, if you're not familiar with him (and let me tell you, i wasn't familiar with all of his songs either before i saw the show) i still believe that you'll like it. only because, well, let's just say that, after seeing the show, i am now a big fan of his music! it's amazing how each of his songs can tell as story! (although, because there is no dialogue, i do suggest you read the synopsis in the playbill before the show starts) plus, there were songs that made me go, "oh, hey! i know this song! i didn't know billy joel sang it!"

hope i helped. :)
