I never thought about this with Angela Lansbury playing the part but after listening to Patti Lupone's characterization I can't help wondering what happened to Mr. Lovett.

Fate is just an excuse used by men who have no destiny.

Doesn't she say he died? I guess you want to know how? But... is that really relevant? I guess one could think she killed him, but... I don't think it would really make a difference.

It's not relevant per se, but it's interesting to think about. I agree, though... Patti's Mrs. Lovett seems much more overtly dangerous than Angela's, but you could argue that the latter has the "wolf in sheep's clothing" thing going on. I think that the nature of Doyle's Sweeney Todd production is that everything has such an air of darkness and menace that it's not hard to imagine more violent backstories for some of the characters.

Yeah, I agree. It's interesting, even if it wouldn't do very much to change the story. Then again, if we outright KNEW that Lovett was as dangerous as we know Sweeney is, something of that "mysterious" quality gets lost, and I kind of like that about her. I also agree that the production overall lends itself to lots of feelings of darkness and danger, which are surely inherent in the story, but presented in a different way here.

Maybe she caught him in bed with Mrs. Mooney.

Maybe she caught him in bed with Mrs. Mooney.

That brings a new meaning to the line "popping pu$$ies into pies," doesn't it?

Just the thought of it's enough to make you sick ...

I love the character of Mrs. Lovett - what a complex piece of work she is. I've often wondered about her backstory, but I like that it's left out in the open. When she starts showing her true motives, it makes her character all the more ... horrible.

Don't mind me, I'm heavily medicated right now.
