Muny to stage JEROME ROBBINS' BROADWAY this summer

Mostly seems pretty bland for such a big anniversary. Maybe some good casting will make it more exciting, but right now I feel no need to venture north next summer.

Hmmm. Curious how they are going to approach JEROME ROBBINS' BROADWAY as that original Broadway production had all the original creative teams involved for each musical represented so they recreated all the original designs (costumes, set design, etc.). That's what made the production so special and lavish as whenever they performed a musical number you felt like you were watching the actual show itself. Only the PETER PAN "I'm Flying" set was a new design but virtually identical to the original so you couldn't tell the difference.

After closing on Broadway, the show toured the United States with almost the full original Broadway cast. It later went on tour internationally.

At first I was excited about this announcement, until I realized that most of the shows in Jerome Robbin's Broadway - FIDDLER, WEST SIDE STORY, PETER PAN, etc. are all shows that haveactually been seen recently (and frequently) at the MUNY. Probably less exciting for audiences there than it was for NYC audiences in the late 1980s when most of those shows hadn't seen recent revivals.

At least the ON THE TOWN segments should feel fresh."



I’m surprised to see this + another Robbins musical, GYPSY, included in the same season — two Gimmicks in one summer. Hopefully someone involved with the original Jerome Robbins’ Broadway or who worked with Robbins will direct/choreograph the show.

Jerry Mitchell was an assistant choreographer on this. And there were others involved that are still with us. I’m sure someone from the original production will supervise.

The Muny is a huge outdoor amphitheatre with 11,000 seats (and the 1,500 seats at the back are free). They get tons of families, and at the end of each season, the Muny surveys its audiences on what THE AUDIENCES would like to see. They choose from a long list of titles, and the choices vary from year to year, depending on availability. Also, the Muny avoids doing a popular show if it's been done there in the past 5 years. In this case, the Muny says it picked ''Jerome Robbins' Broadway'' because it is a celebration of musicals on the Great White Way; an apt choice since the Muny is celebrating its 100th season. The Muny is the first regional to do ''Jersey Boys,'' and ''Meet Me in St. Louis'' is a hometown favorite. I imagine the other shows, like ''Annie,'' were top vote-getters in the audience survey.
