Yes. I don't think it's quite as enjoyable as it was seeing the show live - and the shortness of some of the songs seem even more obvious. But I'm enjoying it. My favourite songs:
Sunshine State of Mind
The Bouquet
The first 25 seconds of "Meet the Heslops" (that little interlude was quite funny in the theatre)
Can't Hang
Lucky Last
Girls Like Us
Amazing
Sydney
Strangely Perfect Stranger
My Mother (Eulogy)
I love that they have kept many of the jokes - "Get off me" "Yeah, get me off" LOL.
I've listened to about half the cast recording thus far and I'm really enjoying it. The score sounds exactly how I imagined, though I think it could be beefed up in its vocal arrangements. Really like Sunshine State of Mind, Sydney and Here Comes the Bride. The only ABBA appears to be Waterloo and SOS.
qol, the film has an incredibly
passionate cult following and
did well for a foreign film in
the US market. But I'm not
sure it has ever achieved
the wide appeal here in
the states that would insure
a long Broadway run.
Among my friends and
family, reactions were
mixed (but passionate
either way). Nobody
minded the Ozzyisms,
but some couldn't accept
the dark elements in the
midst of an otherwise
joyful comedy.
P.S. Muriel's best friend
is named Rhonda.

I love Kate Miller-Heidke's music. This isn't the first project I'd think of if you told me she was writing a musical. I'm curious if she'll adapt her songwriting style to fit the show or if she'll bring her style to the show. For example, I think a lot of Tim Minchin got diluted in Matilda but Waitress retains a lot of Sara Bareilles, just in service of telling the story. Kate has a strong POV in her music that could fit with Muriel's Wedding but I don't know how she was instructed to write to fit the show.
Although it's not Broadway, at one stage there were plans to bring this show to Toronto in 2018. That production has apparently been 'delayed', whatever that actually means, but it might still happen at a later stage.

I mean you can listen to it right now so feel free and let us know what you think haha. Personally as a semi-fan of her work I think its tone/style does come through in the score, although to my ears it does feel like she was trying to work to the traditional (at least modern traditional) style of the genre. So it’s a good mix. It’s a lot more her style than say “The Rabbits”.
qolbinau, can I ask how act 1 ends in terms of plot? It seems the final song of the first act has been omitted from the album?
God my memory is hazy/I don't remember there being a particularly stand-out song at the end of Act 1 (probably why it's not on the album). If I recall correctly it ended soon after her friend started to have symptoms or diagnosis of cancer - either soon after this reveal or perhaps Muriel visiting the bridal shop for the first time and having a photo shoot.

After the Sydney season last year the show went back into workshop. The production opening in Melbourne in March has some new cast members and has been partly rewritten.

I saw the show on the weekend and was absolutely blown away! I didn’t go in with very high expectations as I’ve never been a big fan of the movie, but it was fantastic! I hadn’t listened to the cast recording beforehand, but absolutely loved the songs. Had the CD on in the car this morning and couldn’t wait for work to finish to keep listening to it. Natalie Abbott is a true star in the making (I actually prefer her voice to Maggie’s on the cast recording) and I loved seeing Stefanie Jones in a lead role again.
ICYMI, the "Muriel's Wedding Eurovision entry" (well, sort of) placed ninth, and was suitably Eurovision-y.

I respect your views on all things musical StephieElise and have heard from others that it was far better than expectations--a rave actually.
It arrives here in Brisbane later in the year.
I can't get down to see Lazarus in Melbourne so would love to know your thoughts on this brave new direction for The Production Company.
The cast for Chicago is a must see for me.
Sweet lips , The Age review called Lazarus a mess of a show.
Saw Muriel’s wedding as well , it was fun and glad I got to see it. But for me it lacked something. The scene with the mother towards the end of act two was brilliant theatre. Sadly the rest of the show didn’t raise to the same occasion.
Ouch! Just read all the reviews for Lazarus---one of those Love or Hate.
Looks like it's getting another New York workshop. Does anyone know who was involved in the last workshop a few months back?

Interesting to hear, but I have no intel unfortunately.
For those who saw the show in Australia (I did not), I was wondering if you would be willing to provide some advice on...
Trigger alert: discussion of portrayals of suicide
How the suicide of Muriel's mother is portrayed in the musical? Details aren't necessary; just any opinions on whether or not it was 'satisfactorily' done. I hesitated to say anything earlier because it's such a sensitive topic, and I'm no expert on the right way to portray it, or even discuss it. (But that somehow doesn't stop me from having strong opinions on how it shouldn't be done.) Something about the hints and snippets previously released for this show, makes me wary that I might take issue with how they do it. I'm not sure whether I should elaborate. Anyway, I'll understand if nobody responds to this.
The husband/father was a cruel selfless manipulating ahole but not as strongly portrayed as in the film--same as with the mother. Suicide would have been a wonderful escape from DV.
I disliked the production and the only character that worked for me[and not because of his body] was the gay Russian swimmer.
In some other thread I said I actually felt embarrassed for Abba to be in the same musical.
It needs a hell of a lot of work to elevate it to the level of the movie.
