Music Videos for Musical Movies

I remember that the CHICAGO movie released a music video for "All That Jazz" with Catherine Zata-Jones. Do you think this helped with getting word and exposure for the show out there? Could this have motivated people, who had no idea about the movie, to go see it?

I was wondering because PHANTOM didn't do this and it was a flop at the box office. Had they done this, do you think it would have made a difference?

Do you think this should be done for RENT, THE PRODUCERS, DREAMGIRLS, HAIRSPRAY, etc?

Personally, I say it couldn't hurt and might not be a bad idea for producers to think about.

I don't think it was just the lack of musical video-age that killed the Phantom movie. Not that I don't understand your point.

Oh no. I don't think that was PHANTOM's sole reason for failing. But I was wondering if it would have helped at all.

well RENT has the seasons of love music video on apple.com, unless you mean an actual one to air on like TRL or something.

There is a music video for Rent. It's basically the trailer, minus the release dates and stuff, but there is one. I forget where though.

re: Music Videos for Musical Movies

That has been released for airing on TV (like MTV or VH1)?

While I don't think that a music video alone (or even a hit song) will make or break a movie's success, I'm sure that Catherin Zeta-Jones slinking around in the "All That Jazz" video got more than a few folks into the theatre to see the film.

And to answer your question, yes, I think future movies ("Dreamgirls" or "Hairspray" ) will benefit greatly from music video exposure.

It's pure speculation on my part, but I think that's why they're writing new songs for Dreamgirls now... to get some "pop hit" songs for the girls to do. After all they're a pop group selling hit records, so it makes sense.

Does anyone remember the music video that played on MTV that was shot of "Rum Tum Tugger" from Cats? It featured Terrance Mann and other Broadway "kitties," and ran on MTV for a few months back in the early '80s. It was a special video shoot and a "pop" arrangement of the song. I haven't seen it since, but (for me at the time) it was very good!

I'm pretty sure you could vote for the Seasons of Love video on MTV a little while ago. Actually, I did vote for it, but it may have been a "write-in" vote.

And on the special features of the Phantom dvd they show a music video with Sarah Brightman and Steve Something-or-other for the show.

phantom wasn't that big of a flop it made 154.5 million worldwide..it's budget was 70 million so it profited about 84.5 million.

re: Music Videos for Musical Movies

Back in the '80s there were music videos from several Broadway shows running on MTV (yes... MTV).

I remember the Cats "Rum-Tum Tugger" video (as I mentioned before), also three Phantom videos for the title song, "Music of the Night" and "All I Ask of You."

Also there were several Chess music videos: running with Elaine Paige and others: One Night in Bankok was a hit song, and played all the time,

I also remember Sarah Brightman singing Webber's "Pie Jesu" on MTV, airing regularly. (not that it's from Broadway, but it's Webber)

Things you won't see on that channel anymore!
