Musical that producers paid amateur licensing rights for as promotion?

I recall reading somewhere that the producers of a revival of a musical a few years ago attempted to promote the show by paying for the licensing rights for amateur productions, in an attempt to get more audiences familiar with the show.

Can anybody confirm that this happened? I can't seem to find which show it was.

I don't know about stage producer - but I believe Dreamgirls was able to be licensed for one year with no royalties when the film came out. Whether that was the studio or producers of the film paying for the royalties or just the license holders forgoing stage royalties to get a bigger film royalty - I have no idea.
