Can someone who has seen ROOMS in both D.C. and NY expand more on explaining this number Ham that Happiness replaced, which was mentioned upthread? So Monica's whole cabaret act scene used to be a comedy number?
And- TheaterMania interview with Paul Scott Goodman and Miriam Gordon:
Making ROOMS: Paul Scott Goodman and Miriam Gordon discuss the genesis of the new musical ROOMS, starring Leslie Kritzer and Doug Kreeger

Ham was a part of the show back in its NYMF days. It wasn't there for the DC/Rochester production. I worked at Geva last summer and got to read the book as it used to exist along with hearing the demo from NYMF. Ham was indeed a comedy number at the cabaret (about how Monica is a ham and born for the stage). The news of her father leaving her mother was told in the number Darkness to Light. Ian's verse about his mother dying is still in the show(or was as of Rochester).
I felt that the show benefits from some comedy relief after the breakup. Ham wasn't an amazing number by any means, but I feel it's function was important. It also shows some movement of time. Monica is not as happy as the song suggests, but life does go on and she continues to soldier. I'm on my iPhone or I would write more, but it's a thought and I can expand more tomorrow.

Tix are 8 and 10 bucks and they are selling them for 1/2 off at TKTS? I find that truly hysterical (and a bit sad).
Going back to the comments about asking what show to see: I kind of agree....after all: you are reading a thread where about 1/2 the folks thought positively to the show and 1/2 really disliked it. What kind of advice do you think you will get? 1/2 would encourage and 1/2 would discourage.
Additionally, unless we KNOW your tastes, how could we possibly know if you would like this piece? I think thats the best part of this board...to be able to hear about newer shows and get the buzz...and then be able to decide for myself if I want to go.
