My predictions for the 2004 Tonys
#0My predictions for the 2004 Tonys

Now, the ranking can start. Here are my predictions (and explanations) the 2004 Tonys.
Best New Musical: Wicked (the most conventional choice of the bunch)
Best Musical Revival: Wonderful Town (It was a great show. Since the show opened, I've heard nothing but raves)
Best Actor in a Musical: Hugh Jackman, THE BOY FROM OZ (duh)
Best Actress in a Musical: Idina Menzel, WICKED (Kristin already has hers, and I don't think the producer's will want those two in the same category)
Best Supporting Actor in a Musical: Douglas Sills, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (He handles a bajillion parts every night, and... I dunno... it just seems like his time)
Best Supporting Actress in a Musical: Kristin Chenoweth, WICKED (could this be her second win... in the same category?)
Best New Play: Anna in the Tropics (it won the Pulitzer)
Best Revival of a Play: HENRY IV
Best Actor in a Play: Jefferson Mays, I AM MY OWN WIFE (nothing but raves)
Best Actress in a Play: Tovah Feldshuh, GOLDA's BALCONY, or Daphne Rubin-Vega, ANNA IN THE TROPICS (once again, nothing but raves)
Best Supporting Actor in a Play: Ned Beatty or Jason Patric, CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF (once again, nothing but... ah, you know...)
Best Supporting Actress in a Play: Eileen Atkins, RETREAT FROM MOSCOW (do I really have to say it again?)
NOTE - I haven't seen ALL of the productions I have just named, I simply listen to the "buzz", which is always the best thing to do when predicting awards.

Eileen Atkins wouldn't be considered a supporting actress in The Retreat from Moscow.
I also think that I Am My Own Wife and Golda's Balcony are going to be some trouble for Anna in the Tropics.
And you completely discounted Henry IV, which got far better reviews than Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Posted: 2/15/04 at 9:36pmI agree w/most of your predictions, but Kristin has to be nominated for best actress, her name is above the title. the only excpetions they have made so far this year is that John Tartaglia and Stephanie D'Abruzzio can be nominated for best even though their names aren't above the title. try www.tonys.org for more!

Posted: 2/16/04 at 12:51amWhy is Donna Murphy being passed over for Best Actress here? :) She's won it two times which, arguably, could factor against her, but Ben Brantley essentially put her on Musical Theatre Goddess level in his review. What'd he say about Idina? I don't think I saw the NYT review for Wicked.

The NYTimes review was a three-page love letter to Kristin. Idina did not get a negative review, but was rather overlooked. Still, Brantley's love letter subjects don't always get the Tonys, so Kristin and Donna aren't necessarily "sure wins."
Me, hoping Idina gets it.

Posted: 2/16/04 at 1:05pmExcuse me, but the season isn't over yet!!! We still have at least one major musical opening and a few plays. And I must remind you that in some instances performers from Encores! shows have been nominated for Tony Awards. If that's the case, Patti LuPone would be a force to recon with!

Posted: 2/16/04 at 1:31pmAre you factoring in Assassins, Bombay Dreams and Caroline, or Change into your predictions for the musicals? These three could really shake things up.

Posted: 2/16/04 at 9:21pmAlthough she was a very fine Venus, Melissa Errico was not nominated for a Tony for the Encores production of One Touch of Venus. (Her one Tony nomination was for her performance in Amour). Also, Encores productions, in their limited runs at City Center, are not Tony eligible.

Tony Awards 2004
Musical: Wicked
Book: Wicked
Score: Wicked
Set: Wicked
Actor: Hugh Jackman or Nobert Leo Butz
Actress: Kristen Chenoweth or Idina Menzel or Donna Murphy
Featured Actor: Joel Grey
Featured Actress: Carole Shelly
Director: Joe Mantello
Costume: Wicked
Lighting: Wicked
Revival: Fiddler on the Roof
It looks like Wicked is up for winning the magority of the Tonies. I really think that it`s contender is only Avenue Q! Unless, a new popular musical that rocks audiences comes to become a classic. I think it is safe to say that Wicked is the best new show this season. Although Avenue Q is likey to win. I wouldn`t be happy with a very mature puppet show winning and a show that doesn`t have the fun, family event in it. Avenue Q contains mature situations and after 9/11 we didn`t need a musical about drugs, sex, and politics we need a musical like Wicked.

yep, we sure don't need any of them musicals that make ya think. ouch my head hurts from that. thank goodness they cut most of that kinda stuff from that book before they made it into a musical the whole family can love. even if they can't remember more than maybe one or two songs after they walk outta the theatre. you know i heard tell that at one point early on, outta town, they even let elphaba die!!! can ya believe it?? thank god they came to their senses because we sure don't wanna subject children to having to see a lead character die onstage, i mean doggone, next thing there'll be a musical that's saying there is no easter bunny!!

Posted: 2/16/04 at 10:37pmI personally am rooting for Avenue Q to take the best musical gold and for Donna Murphy to take thehome Best Actress in a Musical Award (although I love all of the potential nominees in that category this year dearly and will be happy to see any of them win).

"Excuse me, but the season isn't over yet!!!"
Well- it should be.
The Tony's should work like the Oscars, by year. If the show doesn't open by the end of the year then it can't be considered that for that year.
I don't like these shows that open up right before Tony's and still get nominated against shows that have been up for several months or over the past year. It just doesn't seem right.
