To me, the only way I can describe this show adequately is Wow.
To start off, I had great seats. Row E, dead center. From the moment I heard the repetitive callings of "Bobby...Bobby baby" I was hooked. This was the first John Doyle production I have seen, and I love his direction. He definitely will get the Tony again. The music was gorgeous. The sound resonated through the tiny theater perfectly. The costumes, set design, lighting, all were great. I loved the characters, though Joanne was played a litle too Beth Leavel-y for my taste. Everyone seemed to embody their characters so WELL. Even though all of the couples were one-dimensional, it ended up being spectacular.
Raul Esparza was AMAZING. He was charmingly off-putting, and we made eye contact a couple of times, which made my night. :) He was the best part of the show, in my opinion. The cast was an ensemble that worked like some oiled machine, but Raul truly stood out. I haven't seen him in anything else, but his "Being Alive" was perfect. He held the last note so beautifully long he was shaking at the end, but I didn't care. Everyone breathed so much passion into their roles, and their instruments. Overall, a breathtaking show. GO SEE IT!
