I meant the thought of someone in an iron lung singing a show tune. But it has to be done the right way.

I forgive you Lake.
And it's really just a line or two (that the guy in the iron lung sings) in the beginning and in the final song "Nothing Bad's Ever Gonna Happen Again". I read that and saw it and all I could think f was the jokes that'll come from that title being the final song when this puppy closes.

Posted: 3/22/08 at 9:49amNormally I would wait for the reviews before I would see a show like this, but schadenfreude is pulling me like an electromagnet to the MArquis Theatre for this one! I have to see this for myself.

I seriously think that's why butts are going in the seats ~ at least from non-previously bought tickets. People just have to see this mess for themselves.
I know that's why I went. LOL.
Prepare for the worst. You MAY be pleasantly surprised. Maybe.

Posted: 3/22/08 at 12:24pmMy appreciation for the awesomely bad got the better of me. I'm seeing it tonight. Honestly, even if it really is THAT bad (which I have a hard time believing, since some of the people who have said so just use hyperbole to fluff their own egos), I think I'll have a good time. I can go for some camp.

Posted: 3/22/08 at 12:33pmAHHHHH....yes some of the lines are cheesy and corny. Thats the point. That's the humor. If you dont like that kind of thing then why would you go? Its like someone going to Passing Strange and hating it because it used rock music or hating in the hates because there was to much rap. See what you like. Or Enjoy things for the genre they are. Just a thought

I haven't seen the show... so obviously I shouldn't be making a comment about it... but... I think that lyric is quite funny... It is clearly not supposed to be serious... it's camp... the polio vaccines... I mean... taken out of context it is very campy/very John Waters... to me at least... of course... the show may be awful awful... but... what I have heard so far... like the criticism of the gasmask dance... it seems like people are missing the point. Again... I didn't see the show... this idea maybe ultimately invalid.

It's camp. Yes, I get that. But it's BAD camp. (As opposed to something like Xanadu which is "good" camp.)
It actually came across more as them TRYING to do melodrama and doing it badly.

Sure.
It's just people saying "Oh that lyric is so corny"... it's supposed to be corny... I mean... that's the idea... people who said... oh they do a dance with gasmasks... isn't that awful! Yea... it's supposed to be awful... it's interesting to me that you would suggest Xanadu is good camp... because... I don't really think so... so... either I would REALLY hate Cry Baby... or we have different ideas of things.

What I mean is that at least in Xanadu they seem to get that they're doing camp.
IMHO, in Cry-Baby it comes off as them trying to be serious and doing camp.
IMHO.
There is a difference.

I guess, um... there's a big difference between what you and I consider camp. That is exactly why I don't think the camp works in Xanadu. They keep saying "look how campy we are!" And that kills the joke for me. I much prefer camp that let's us figure it out. I mean... in true camp... they are trying to be serious. That's the whole point... something deadly serious that is hilarious... that's the point of true camp anyway.

Posted: 3/22/08 at 1:06pmIt sounds like the problem isn't as much the lyrics as it is the direction.

Posted: 3/22/08 at 1:11pmWell, yeah, that's you, but if the problem is that they lyrics are coming off as true attempts at melodrama rather than satirical camp, then that's not probably not entirely the lyrics themselves. It sounds like there's at least potential for them to be hilarious -- especially if people are laughing at them on paper (screen?) -- but it's not being presented right. Camp is going to have lyrics that are cringe-worthy. It's about what you do with them. And it's a hard thing to get right.
