"Mystery of Edwin Drood" possible as a one-act?

A good friend of mine is the drama director at a local high school and is looking at the possibility of cutting down Drood to fit into the 30 minute time limit. Since I don't know the show, I wondered if those of you who know the show well think this is possible at all. How plot-driven are the musical numbers? If the book is cut so drastically, is the plot still able to be understandable? Thoughts of any kind?

Side note -- high schools have cut down musicals before to fit into the time limit for one acts. One of the best I have seen was a 30 minute version of "A Chorus Line".

Well the problem is there isn't an ending...

Its a fairly dense story. If you are talking about the musical, there are a lot of gratuitous numbers (it was set in a Music Hall, after all), but the major gimmick was the "voting" on the ending, and obviously that takes time and wouldn't work for a 30 minute one act.

Wow! 30 minutes? Talk about the Readers' Digest Version.

Don't think it would work at all. There's too much plot. Each of the characters has to be fleshed out enough to show a motivation for the murder. Otherwise, what is the audience voting for?

P.S. -- Yes, there's that pesky legal issue too.

Once On This Island already IS a one-act. It runs about an houre and 20 minutes total.

DROOD runs over two hours. It's hard enough to follow the plot as it is. If you cut all the songs, you'd still have a show that's over an hour long. In other words, you's have to cut half the dialogue as well.

Besides that, it's illegal.

Yes, I'm sure the "theatre police" wouldn't find you if you changed it (or hacked it to pieces, as you're suggesting). I think they have enough trouble chasing down Equity and other union productions that are in violation. I DO know of a union theatre that was fined for casting "white folks" as the trio in Little Shop. The producer had to scramble around to prove that he had done his best to cast minorities in the show. I think he couldn't do that convincingly and got slapped with a nice fine, plus HAD to use non-traditional casting in a future production to compensate. Those are the kind of issues they're hunting around for. As well as shows that cast non-union members, etc.

They're probably not going to arrest you... probably.

There are actually ways to deal with the legal issues if you're cutting to fit time parameters at one of the major high school or college competitions. Many of those competitions only allow a 30 minute cutting and licensing agents are aware of that. It's a pain and can take months of prep work, but they'll allow you to submit a cutting for them to approve. Not all authors allow their work to be cut, and some are very picky about what can and can't be used.

Allamarane is correct. I've judged these competitions before -- they are pretty standard fare and most playwrights okay it for "educational purposes." One exception was always Peter Schaeffer -- who won't allow his plays to be cut -- unless he's recently changed his mind.

That said, most of the competitions I've seen like this have been one hour. I don't know how you can make a compelling cut of any full length play in only 30 minutes.

Yeah, welcome to high school one-acts in Nebraska. 30 minutes tops, on and off the stage, including tech set up. It's crazy.

So, I'm guessing the concensus is that to try to do Drood as a 30 minute decent cutting is pretty darn next to impossible due to the complexity of the storyline?

No, they just take out quite a few of them. When I saw Chorus Line, they kept the Opening, I Can Do That, At the Ballet, Music and the Mirror, What I did for Love, and One, I think. Some of those were pared down a bit, but it still managed to work. It was actually runner-up at State.

Thanks for the input on Drood - I'll pass it on!
