Congratulations to NEWSIES!
Newsies' claims biggest box office in Chicago history: $2,012,723
The Orlando run later this month is almost entirely sold out already.
Yeah...this is really a production that needed to go out on a tiered contract. Huge financial risk touring this show.

My guess is the cast likely isn't complaining about their overage checks.

Wow I would have never pegged this show for that kind of accomplishment.

It's not just the cast, the musicians' and stagehands' contracts are also determined by the Producers' weekly guarantee. Overages are a nice consolation, but they're treated only as a "bonus" and not salary. I bet anyone working on that tour would prefer to be earning the same respectable salary as their counterparts in NY, with benefits paid on that salary, rather than maybe getting a fat overage check now and then.

And in fact, salaries on Newsies are lower than other tours, because "overages will make up the difference," which is exactly what wasn't supposed to happen when overages were introduced into contracts.
Why would any Disney show go out on a tiered contract? It's stupid. The whole tiered thing is really stupid. Just to keep it competitive with non-union tours? So now every tour is going to go on a tier because they don't want to lose money. I mean, Sound of Music is going out on a tiered salary. If Sound of Music isn't guaranteed to sell for a week in markets how the hell is something like Fela! going to do?!
