Posted: 10/26/03 at 3:17pmSomeone I know went to see NINE the other night and commented on Luisa and Carla kissing a la Britney and Madonna. Is this true? What is this all about? For what purpose would something like this would be added to the show?

That's what I read on the other board, too. What I am curious about is in which scene does this happen? Did they really add it or was this just a single action?

Posted: 10/26/03 at 4:57pmthis would be a weird subtext! I could sorta see Luisa kissing Carla but only goodbye! ( she always knew about his affairs & while it hurt she always knew the other woman would be left behind & felt sorry for them)

Posted: 10/26/03 at 5:04pmThe tango created for Chita has been replaced with a burlesque for Eartha--it's very dreamlike, hence Guido imagining Carla and Luisa kissing.

Posted: 10/28/03 at 12:02amThe last time I saw the show, during the very first part of the Grand Canal sequence, I remember Carla came onto one of the catwalks with a rose, gave it to Luisa, and they kissed on both cheeks. I don't remember any Madonna/Brittney kiss, though that might have changed since the last time I saw it.

Posted: 10/29/03 at 1:46pmOh, it's revolting. To begin with -- & this is a personal opinion, so forgive me for being blunt -- Eartha is about as sexy as a cow in high heels. She frightens the audience so that no man wants to admit he's sent the flowers. Then they threw in this quick kiss at the end of her featured number. If it had a point, maybe, but it seems to be there only to shock. Remember when Chita's Lilliane (sp?) used to throw her head back & say, "I love it!" about Antonio's Guido attentions? Now she says it about the kiss. Such a beautiful young woman kissing such a bag. Not titillating, not shocking, just sickening. Okay, bring on the angry replies from Eartha fans!

Okay, now I'm totally confused about the kiss.
I saw the show twice with Krakowski/Masterson. They had a talk and hug on the balcony when MSM catches the rose from Guido in the canal sequence. Perhaps a cheek to cheek kiss, don't remember.
I saw it again on 10/8 with Gettelfinger/MSM and I was on the far right, so I couldn't see the right balcony action. I don't know if Sarah or MSM kissed or not.
Now the last poster said that Kitt is kissing somebody and saying "I love it!" in the Folies Bergere scene. Neither she nor Chita kissed anybody when I saw the show.
So which scene does this kiss happen in and who's doing the kissing? The broadway.com reviewer made reference to a lesbian kiss so I guess it's there somewhere.
But I've seen the show 3x and never saw what's being discussed here.
Thanks for clearing this up.

Posted: 10/29/03 at 2:07pmI never saw a Carla-Luisa kiss or even a hug, to be honest! (Ah, the beauty of live theatre, where things change all the time!) The kiss I think everyone is referring to is the kiss between the producer & the reviewer ("Robespierre").

.....and that would be Eartha Kitt and Saundra Santiago I guess.

Okay, but the post started with talk of MSM and Sara still having passion and of Guido having a lesbian fantasy?
So how do we get from that to Liliane and her producer kissing?? Two totally different scenarios -- and subtexts!
Yes, I guess live theater does change. We go from no kisses to two!
Don't think I can afford to see it again (and Stamos isn't worth seeing again), so I guess I'll remain in the dark on this new twist. . . .

Posted: 10/29/03 at 10:10pmAt first, it was Liliane and Robespierre. Then it was changed to Carla and Luisa---this taking place in the new version of the "Follies" number. I think for 77, Eartha looks fantastic.

I saw the show on Tuesday and felt that the kiss between Carla and Luisa definitely worked as part of what was clearly a fantasy sequence in the Follies number.
As far as Eartha Kitt is concerned, she looked damn good in that corset. The audience was howling (in a positive catcalling way) when she made her entrance in that outfit. True, Eartha isn't "pretty" per se, but she exudes a powerful sexual magnetism. What a body and what a presence! And if men are somewhat intimidated by her, then all the better. That only heightens the whole dominatrix-esque aspect of his childhood fascination with her.

Ah, okay, I stand corrected! I haven't seen the show since the new cast's 1st week of performances. They could very well have changed the kiss to Carla-Luisa, not so yucky.
As for the people who disagreed w/ my assessment of Earth'a attractiveness/sexiness/repulsiveness... it takes all kinds to make a world! I promise to respect your opinion now that you've respected mine. (That is sincere, not chat-board sarcastic!) Cheers.

Uh, RobbO, if the answer is yes, what is the question? What are you referring to as being bad. . . .
