"Sweet Talker" Hurt star bullies producer to hold on...
http://www.nypost.com/entertainment/43458.htm
I love Michael Riedel. He's as shocked as everyone else. I especially like his assessment of the show. To quote: Sweet Charity has (a) received poor reviews in three cities; (b) is not a very good show to begin with; (c) sold 42 tickets on Friday despite an 8-million-word profile of D'Amboise; (d) has a paltry $2 million advance; and (e) is saddled with an injured star who, despite her pluck and determination, may still be hobbling around on April 18.
Enjoy.

I'll drink to that Mr. Riedel!!!
Personally, the more and more I read about this whole idea, the more i discover how incrddibly bizarre it all is. (1.5 million dollars popping outta nowhere?)
okay then...
Again, very well said Riedel!

Posted: 3/30/05 at 12:01pmI wish everyone would just take this for what it is, a FUN SHOW! Look at The Boy From Oz, that was 100% train wreck but the audiences loved it! Yes, it's star was good but he did have major pitch problems and really had nothing to do with it's subject matter. Let's just sit back and enjoy this fun 60's piece of fluff. On the postive side it's showing a new generation the old type of musicals that do not exist anymore.

Posted: 3/30/05 at 12:10pmgood point honeyhoney, if only they brought back more musicals from that time period. *Why couldn't I have been born 70 years earlier????????????????*

"Sold 42 tickets Friday?" EEK! Even if that is a figure of speech, if that NY TImes puff piece didn't sell tickets, what will!?
And I love theatre, I love shows, I hope for nothing but success for every single production, but I still don't understand what the point is to reviving a show that no one was clamoring to see with a "star" no one seems to be too fond of. I'd see Charity again with Applegate, but it's more out of curiousity than anticipation of a great evening of theatre.

Posted: 3/30/05 at 1:30pmIt strikes me as a bit sad that the producers are so willing to go the extra mile for this less-than-compelling show while worthy new shows can barely get together the cash to think about going to New York.

Does Reidel ever read anything outside his notebook? His quote below is wrong regarding the reviews and the injury!!
"Sweet Charity" has (a) received poor reviews in three cities; (b) is not a very good show to begin with; (c) sold 42 tickets on Friday despite an 8 million-word New York Times profile of D'Amboise; (d) has a paltry $2 million advance; and (e) is saddled with an injured star who, despite her pluck and determination, may still be hobbling around on April 18."
Perhaps Reidel should learn to use the internet and read OTHER people's opinions before claiming the show received poor reviews in all three cities. Or even this board!
Muckraker!! Muckracker I say!!!

Reidel is so dead on in his assessment of this show it shocks me. It is all a big PUBLICITY STUNT! Good/Bad WHATEVER! And that is NOT what a GOOD BROADWAY SHOW is made out of. If this is what producers have to resort to - to get their show to take off, God Help Broadway! Whatever happened to putting on a show that was worthy of a production?
With all this HoopLa - LA CAGE better walk on that stage come Tony night and take its rightful award (while it has had its issues, it didn't pull anything as conviluted as this)! What a turn off!

Posted: 3/30/05 at 5:35pmWe are supposed to believe that Barry Weissler ran out and raised $1.5 million over the weekend because of a TV star's plea??? That is the most preposterous thing I have ever heard. Anyone who has ever met him knows that. She came up with the money. That is the only explanation.

Yes I think Applegate came up with the money.
And you know what -- that says something. It shows incredible character. I do hope that Barry and Fran really have been working out their entire scheme and do have the "real" version of the show waiting in the wings just for NYC (with all new brilliant choreography and direction!) because I really would like to see this show have a chance to succeed.

Your screen name, La Cage, isn't exclusive to any one PC. I can be Michael Bennett from home, work, or any computer terminal with internet service in the world...
