Thanks Matt_G, I feel absolved re: NYTW Rent vs. Broadway Rent

re: Female 2 Female, I love the 6/8 section!

re: He Says...wish it stayed in the show. I think it really helps set up Roger and Mark's relationship. I don't think it's set up as strongly as it could be in the final version.

I love Open Road.

Pssstttt, check your PMs cantthinkofanythinggood. :-P

And yeah, Glory wasn't part of it then. Just the tune. But just the thought of Roger singing about half of a brain scares me to no end.

Yeah, I wish I hadn't have listened to it again. He sounds like Tony Danza trying to sing.

Right brain, Right brain, can't find the right brain. FIND!!! The right brain...

This song did nothing for me.

I love Open Road, too, and He Says.

And I like the section in Christmas Bells about Mark and Maureen. It lead into the "There, that's her." "Maureen?" "Mimi!" part a lot better. I always thought it was a little thrown in there in the show.

hahahaha. The first time I heard that song I literally just burst into laughter. I can honestly say that that is the only song in RENT history that I disliked. I love everything else about it, but that.

Obviously I'm alone on this, and Adam will always be THE Roger, but I actually really like the sound of the Roger on the demo. He sounds a lot like Bryan Adams which I thought was a very appropriate sound for the time. Just doesn't have the power sound Adam has. But it was a good rock sound for the period. And remember, the demo Roger didn't have the benefit of a professional recording session and sound system that the OBC had. Updated On: 3/10/05 at 11:38 PM

It must be hard to lose your right brain. I lost my keys once so I completely know how he felt.

I love Bryan Adams, but I still don't think Tony had a good enough voice. And in the recording, he didn't seem to have the power either. I mean, I know I haven't seen it so I can't exactly say he was bad, but I still just don't like his voice. He sounds more strained than Adam does.

Overall, there doesn't seem to be as much energy in the show. I like how Rent came out in the end much better! re: NYTW Rent vs. Broadway Rent

And is it just me, or is Right Brain a REALLY dirty song?

Yeah all in all, I'm glad how RENT turned out in the end. It's spectacular. re: NYTW Rent vs. Broadway Rent

Thank you Dreamcatcher. That's my absolutely adorable two year-old nephew Zackary. Yes, he's the next Roger, as long as he can find a Mark. re: NYTW Rent vs. Broadway Rent

If not, then he's definitely the next Adam Pascal. He already loves music, has rhythm, and his fav song is One Song, Glory. re: NYTW Rent vs. Broadway Rent

*whistles* Wow how did I miss that one....OK remind me to not read lyrics for the first time at midnight after little-no sleep. :-P It obviously hinders my intellect and memory power.

And yes, your nephew is definitly a future rock star at the least. Look at how well he pulls off those plaid pants! :-P As soon as he gets old enough, teach him to sing Glory and Your Eyes and see what happens. re: NYTW Rent vs. Broadway Rent

Adam vs. Tony: Adam's sound is more about anger, Tony's sound is more introspective and anguished. Adam's has power, Tony's has pain and sadness and that makes Roger sound more vulnerable to me, which I like, and I imagine Larsen liked it too or he wouldn’t have used him on the recording. In Open Road, that sort of frail, desperate sound really brings across the emotion of the song for me. I have a hard time imagining Adam pulling off that tender of a song (let's face it, Adam's Your Eyes is not his finest moment).

He Says: Actually when I said that I wish He Says would have stayed in the show to help set up Roger and Mark as characters as well as their relationship, I was thinking of both Cool/Fool and He Says together. I like them both and I think of them as one “scene” which I wish stayed in.

re: Adam, then I step out, because I'm not entirely familiar with NYTW. Adam's "Your Eyes" isn't his finest moment vocally, I'll admit, but isn't that all because of the anguish he's going through? Let's talk about Adam's Glory for just a second. There is more emotion in that man's voice than I've ever heard or seen in anyone else's EVER when he sings Glory, even when he does it now, nine years later. If there's ANYTHING that Adam does well, it's acting through song, and singing with perfectly timed emotion. He can sing the sh*t out of anything you give him, and he can sing really tender stuff, too.

Oh, and it's spelled "Larson."

Okay, I was so gonna post this last night, but bww wasn't working, so: That's cuz you're a dirty girl Lael... who is the one who found those amazing pants my little front man is wearing. Right Brain is one weird song... in my opinion.

And I will teach him those songs. He gets giddy everytime I sing Glory to him. When he hears me say front man, he giggles. Then he says it.

And with that said...

Okay joniray, I do have to agree with the fact that You're a Fool combined with He Says would have been great to see in the movie, but I have to completely disagree on your views of Adam vs Tony. I know I've never seen Tony, but from what I've heard, he's not really all that great. I just don't hear the emotion Roger's portraying when Tony sings. Okay, Your Eyes really isn't all that great for Adam as Roger, but I think Adam could do really good singing Open Road. He's got the right voice quality for it. Adam's passionate when he sings, so he could bring the emotion it deserves into the song.

To me, Tony's "introspective and anguished" sound comes across more as strained and painful, and his "pain and sadness" don't come across at all. To concur with the last two posters, Adam's voice not only manages to convey his emotion STUNNINGLY well, but you can also STAND his singing. I can't listen to Tony without either quickly turning it off or laughing hysterically.

And remember, Jonathan LarsOn didn't have final say in casting. If I'm correct, Daphne Ruben-Vega wasn't his first choice for Mimi (although we all know she did an amazing job), but she was also featured in the NYTW.
