UPDATE: Thanx to henrikegerman, rosscoe(au) and TotallyEffed, all of whom answered simultaneously.
However, after reading the Wikipedia synopsis of the show I have to correct an error in my inquiry; the husband finds Sylvia in the park, not at a dog pound.

I’m currently writing a book about anthropomorphism (endowing animals with human qualities) in the fine and popular arts, including the theater where performers regularly portray animals onstage, from "Cats" to "The Lion King," Albee’s "Seascape" and beyond.
I’m hoping someone remembers a play whose title I’ve forgotten, about a man who brings home a stray from a dog pound and the effect it has on his marriage. The dog was played by a woman, but not in any sort of costume:
When he first brings her home in Act 1 she is disheveled and dressed in ragged clothing; in Act 2 she’s attractive and dressed in new clothing after a trip to a grooming salon.
The first person to name this show wins my deep appreciation; suggestions as to other shows featuring anthropomorphic characters are also welcome.
Thanx much!
