I'm trying to figure out what show meets these criteria:

written in the 80's

requires a strong black male voice

set in 1800's America

if anyone knows what show this could be please let me know, thanks!
i'll try to put up more info about it as i get it...

Tintypes?
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

re: Name that show...

my first instinct was Ragtime although I know it's completly wrong according to your criteria. Hopefully someone can help you out!!

re: Name that show...

it would be ragtime, but it only needs one strong black voice, who happens to be a male. i can't think of anything besides big river and show boat, but i really don't think that's it......hmm.....

Are you doing said musical for school or something? And your teacher will only give you hints as to what it is?

re: Name that show...

Ragtime was not written in the 80's...
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

re: Name that show...

The Grind takes place in 1933 Chicago, so that can't be it.

I would think it has to Big River unless it's the Tap Dance Kid, or Once on this Island (which was written in the 80s but was on Bway in 1990) and I don't think either of those took place in the 1800s. The only other shows requiring a strong black voice written in the 80s would be Dreamgirls, Ain't Misbehavin',Sophisticated Ladies and maybe Cats if you cinsider Ken Page Old Deuteronomy and he is an African American male.

I don't see how it could be anything besides 'Big River', but I'm curious to know what it is once you find out.

re: Name that show...

Big River HAS to be it...but I will be the first to laugh if it's something really obvious that we've missed.
