This is a great example of what I was saying. I have met patti a few times and have found her to be very pleasant and accomodating to her fans. However, she can come off as mean and rude when she is trying to rush through a crowd of fans to get somewhere. I remeber one night after a concert in NYC she rushed by the crowd at the stage door. She didn't stop for autographs and didn't acknowledge anyone. She was rushing home because she had a sick child waiting for her. She had done the concert so as not to disappointher fans and had tried to slip by them unnoticed so as not to make them feel bad that she wasn't stopping to sign autographs. She just deperately wanted to get home as quickly as possible. Many in the crowd complained that she was a B##ch. That's unfair.
Another example of misunderstood behaviour is Carol Channing. As much as possible she avoids coming out of the theater into crowds of people and everyone thinks it's becasue she doesn't want to greet fans. The truth is the woman has extremely bad eyesight and has particular trouble seeing at night. The idea of walking into a crowd and possibly being seperated from her escort, whose arm she clings to for dear life, is frightening. Think about it. An elderly woman who is small and thin and can't see where she's going is suddenly seperated from the person who is leading her. She could fall and get hurt very easily. She's very aware of this because she has had some minor accidents on stage.
So, just keep in mind that there are circumstances under which someone just cannot stop and talk to you. You don't alway know the whole story. When someon leaves a stage door smiling and waiving but quickly moving on, it's most likely that they can't stop but are trying in the only way they can at that moment to acknowledge their fans.
