Hi all,

As November is National Native American History Month, I have been making an effort to engage deeper with art made for and by Native Americans. Of course I have figures like Will Rodgers (Cherokee), John Trudell (Dakota), and Wesley Studi (Cherokee) on my list, but I have hit a serious snag in finding Native people involved in the theatre - if you have recommendations, please share them here!

(I'm not looking for white people playing Native roles a la Jerry Mitchell in Will Rodgers Follies)

Look into Perseverance Theatre in Juneau, Alaska. They produce and workshop tons of works by Native Alaskans. They also produce well-known plays and musicals. They were supposed to co-produce Snow Child with Arena Stage, I believe, but something didn't work out.

Larissa Fasthorse (Sicangu Lakota) is a playwright and choreographer. Her play The Thanksgiving Play made her the first Native playwright to have written one of the top ten most-produced plays in America.

Also, this is from 2018, but here's a great piece from American Theatre on Hawai'i and Alaska Native theatre:

Indigenous States

part of a larger Staging Our Native Nation piece which was that month's issue.

Lynn Riggs (playwright for Green Grow the Lilacs) was Cherokee I believe.  More tangential to theater but Maria Tallchief has also had a huge amount of influence in ballet.
