Nearing Olivier Awards Cut Off

As far as the Oliviers are concerned, they are West End awards, which means shows like Aspects Of Love and Paradise Found at the Chocolate Factory and the Open Air Into the Woods & Les Mis 25th Anniversary tour will not be eligible for Best Musical or Best revival, nor will the performances in those shows.

Also I would say that Mark Umbers' role in Charity is a leading role rather than a supporting one. And, if ITW were eligible, Jenna Russell would be up for Best Actress rather than Supporting - the Baker's Wife is the lead role and Joanna Gleason won the Best Actress Tony for her performance in the OBC.

As I don't have a crystal ball, I have no idea what shows/performances will be nominated and certainly after some of the shocks of recent years cannot even attempt to predict who or what will win awards. All I can say is who I would vote for - though with Best Musical I'm not even sure of that as I don't think any of them were particularly outstanding. I have yet to see Love Story so maybe that will get my nod - Legally Blonde is an okay show but I enjoyed Flashdance more and everyone on here should know by now how low I rate LND lol.

If Passion does not win Best Revival it will be criminal IMO. For Best Actress, I find it hard to choose between Elena Roger, Tamsin Outhwaite and Victoria Hamilton-Barritt - three very contrasting performances but all three simply brilliant. I guess my heart would go with Victoria. Re. Best Actor, Umbers was superb but my vote would definitely go for David Thaxton who I thought was fantastic as Giorgio.

Nearing Olivier Awards Cut Off

Actually, Into the woods at the Open air theatre does count as a west end show, not a fringe production.

Firstly: Because it was counted as such for the theatregoers choice awards

And Secondly: Because last year Samantha Spiro and the company of Hello Dolly! at the park won various Olivier Awards, including Best actress for her.

I would also agree that Jenna Russell's Baker's Wife was a leading role, and I love into the woods, but it's so hard to gauge that because all of them are relatively leading roles, and I would probably have to say that Mark Hadfield should be a leading actor and Michael Xavier for supporting.

Go Team Waddingham!

Nearing Olivier Awards Cut Off

The re-vamped Les Mis production (tour) will not be applicable for Oliviers - it didn't do a run of 30 performances at the Barbican. Which also means that John Owen-Jones et al can not be nominated.
Duncan James's role in Legally Blonde can hardly be put as "Lead", as far as I'm concerned and... didn't Sweet Charity open in November 2009?
ETA: Sorry, just saw that bob8rich had mentioned some of this. Still, am confused about Sweet Charity...

Thanks Musicalboy for the info re the Open Air eligibility - I stand corrected!

Ugly Duckling - Sweet Charity opened at the Chocolate Factory in November 2009 - I saw it there in February 2010. It transferred to the West End in May 2010, so it does qualify for Oliviers this year.

Nearing Olivier Awards Cut Off

As good as the performances are, I actually don't see the Oliviers awarding both Ramin Karimloo and Sheridan Smith. Smith, maybe, but I just don't think they will consider the LND-Phantom to be a role that deserves to be recognised with an Olivier, especially acting-wise and compared to a couple of other performances this year. And they, too, are a bit snobby...
Also, Scarlett Strallen might have a shot at being nominated for Best Supporting Actress, and if anyone from "Passion" has a chance of being nominated for Supporting Actor, it would be David Birrell, not Allan Corduner, I believe.

I half-expect, half-hope for these to be nominated:

Best Musical:
Legally Blonde
Love Story
Fela
Love Never Dies

Best Revival:
Passion
Sweet Charity
Hair
Into The Woods

Best Actor:
David Thaxton
Michael Arden
Michael Xavier
Ramin Karimloo

David Birrell

Best Supporting Actress:
Scarlett Strallen
Caissie Levy
Jenna Russell
Ruthie Stevens

(Although I'm absolutely uncertain about the Supporting Actress list. And they do sometimes nominate more than just four, don't they?)

According to officiallondontheatre.co.uk, the awards are gonna get BBC coverage. Awesome! Apparently they're also maintaing the Award for most popular musical as voted for by theatregoers. My money has to be on Les Mis, its probably been the most popular thing this year with the O2 and the tour and everithing, although Legally Blonde is also a contender. I wish that wicked could win again just to validate the amazing work of Rachel and Louise, but that seems unlikely.
#9

Nearing Olivier Awards Cut Off

I loved Michael Arden in Aspects - but as the show was at the Choc Factory unfortunately his performance is not eligible for an Olivier.

From what I've read I guess Sheridan Smith must be a front-runner for BA in a musical but I can't really comment as I have not seen her performance. I saw LB in New York and, though I did not actually hate it, I didn't like it enough to sit through it again in London.

Actually, the Donmar's Passion might be eligible as well, I'm not sure, but didn't Elena win there for her Piaf a few years ago?
#11

Nearing Olivier Awards Cut Off

Yes, "Passion" is definitely eligible. And thanks bob8rich, I obviously wasn't paying attention...
In that case, I really can't say who could be the fourth Best Actor nominee. Maybe Sahr Ngaujah, maybe Gavin Creel, maybe Mark Umbers if they put him up for lead (but he might have a better shot at going with supporting).

For the time being, let's say
David Thaxton
Michael Xavier
Ramin Karimloo
Sahr Ngaujah

Mark Umbers is definitely leading actor and not supporting. And he deserves to win it.

Even though it's not eligible, were it nominated, the Les Mis tour would be likely classed as Revival.

Cheers Mark for doing the plays, no mean feat.

Who should win what award, lets keep for another day and concentrate on nominations for now.

* What my choice is for what should be nominated.

I have made changes, Aspects of Love, Paradise Found and Les Mis 25th Tour are out, including actors/actresses.

Mark Umbers and Jenna Russell promoted to leading actors.

David Birrell and Scarlett Strallen added to supporting roles.

Great point made by Ugly Duckling that Les Mis 25th Tour would not be eligible as it did not play over 30 performances, was it 22 they played? Anyway did The Fantastiks play over 30 performances? If not then it should be removed from the list?

Nearing Olivier Awards Cut Off Scarlett Strallen was (a wonderful) Clara in "Passion", it's her sister Summer who is playing Meg in "Love Never Dies"... don't think she will be nominated for that, though...
#16

Nearing Olivier Awards Cut Off

For my money, Josefina Gabrielle would have to be at the very least a nominee for Best Supporting Actress in a musical for her performance in Sweet Charity.

Ugly Duckling you are right Summer Strallen role was pretty cringe worthy, always get the Strallen family mixed up, Scarlett Strallen did play a decent role in Pasion, she is in, so is Josefina Gabrielle.

Just edited my previous list.

Nearing Olivier Awards Cut Off

Sorry to be adding observations so periodically lol - just having random thoughts. But I just realised a major omission IMO from the Best Supporting Actor in a musical list. I thought Edward Petherbridge's performance in The Fantasticks was a master class in comic timing, so he would get the nod from me not just for a nomination but for the actual award.

I thought Edward Petherbridge's performance was very good, as was Clive Rowe's in a very poor show.

One big omission from me, I missed a musical for best revival, can anyone think of it?

Edward Petherbridge is on the list for best supporting actor.

Other actresses who must feature in the nominations are:

Zoe Wannamaker
Nancy Carroll
Tracie Bennett

Shame all 3 can't win

Nearing Olivier Awards Cut Off

(Although I'm absolutely uncertain about the Supporting Actress list. And they do sometimes nominate more than just four, don't they?)

There's also every chance the Oliviers will continue to list all the Supporting Performance in a Musical nominations in a single category, men and women together. They did split Supporting Performance in a Play into Male and Female categories last year, so hopefully that will continue and extend into the Musical categories, but I wouldn't guarantee it.

And whatever happened to the Best Company Performance award? Seems odd to have it for one year only.

Nearing Olivier Awards Cut Off

I pray that Passion or Hair gets best revival.
And not Into the Woods; despite being filled with such talented performers, I think the production on a whole was a total mess, and that the changes made were totally unecesarry and just bad. I'm a bit biased however, it is one of my favourite shows.

I think a lot of actors/actresses and plays/musicals are worthy this year, my few objections would be Love Never Dies and Into the Woods most of all.

Best musical event however? Gotta Les Mis O2! Simples!
THEATRE 2016: Grey Gardens; SwkPlayhouse, Cats; London Palladium, Into the Woods; Royal Exchange, Show Boat; Sheffield Crucible, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Prsicilla Queen of the Desert; UK Tour, Narrative; RWCMD, Mojo; RWCMD, The Barber of Seville; WNO, Rabbit Hole; Hampstead, The Marriage of Figaro; WNO, Figaro Gets a Divorce; WNO, Tom: The Musical; UK Tour Upcoming: Anything Can Happen; RWCMD, Cysgy'n Brys'ur, Long Day's Journey Into Night; Bristol Old Vic, Only the Brave, The Caretaker; The Old Vic, People Places and Things, Blue/Orange; Young Vic, Bernadette Peters, Carole King, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts I & II

If anyone has made it to the Donmar yet they will understand, Derek Jakobi HAS to win Best Actor in a play for King Lear. Hands down the best performance I have seen all year by a mile.

luke-h***, stop objecting to things you've never seen.

I think Sweet Charity knocks the ball out of the park for best revival. Sure, Hair was good, but as a show...it's not that good, is it?
