Re-listening to this again. Sean Hayes can carry a tune, but his voice quivers a lot and where's the emotion?
This is a cast recording representing a stage show. You're playing a part...even if it's on an audio recording. Where's the fire driving Chuck telling us the listener he is over and done with the whole situation at hand, throwing in the towel and going where his heart leads him? He just sings it.
On the other side of the coin Miss Chenoweth just breaks my heart with her rendition of "Whoever You Are, I Love You". It's one of Bacharach's most beautiful melodies and Chenoweth's voice compliments them and Hal Davis' lyrics note for note, word for word. Everything number she has is a winner and a joy to listen to.
I went back to the original OBCR and the tempos for the songs were slowed down. It's especially noticeable on Knowing When To Leave , Overture and Promises, Promises
For the most part the recording is a good one and if for me Chenoweth has no business even playing this part, audibly she's perfection. For me she's the reason to get the recording.
As a huge Bacharach aficionado I always welcome new interpretations of his work and this is a most welcome addition to my music library.
It's a nice collection of new Bacharach/David songs. It's great to have some of these songs in their complete versions, most notably A Fact Can Be A Beautiful Thing. Knowing When To Leave and Where Can You Take A Girl.
It's very hit and miss for me and in the end no one will ever top Orbach's rendition of Chuck's songs, no one has even come close (even Dionne Warwick's version of the title song is slowed down so she can keep up with the meter changes).
So while this is nice to have the Original Broadway Cast despite the alterations is still the superior and definitive recording.

Does "A Fact Can Be a Beautiful Thing" actually fade out in the show? I'm confused as to why it does on CD when there's no longer an actual need for it like time constraints which was often the excuse for older recordings that were released on LP. This CD has plenty of space left.
