You mean the pop star who dresses like a Penthouse centerfold? I'm sure she's a very gifted actress with an incredible operatic range. Voiceanth would know.

Hey Jake, nice column!

Jeff, I don't think we know what you mean when you say "wow yet another one to be released in 2004." another what????? I don't understand what you mean.

The making of the film version of Weber's The Phantom of the Opera and its casting have been widely reported in entertainment news media and in the general news media as well.

Are you thinking that an additional film of Phantom was being made in 2004???

Alan Cumming was to be in the film, but dropped out for reasons unknown -- to me anyway.

I wonder what #'s get retained & which get jettisoned. In addition, wonder if ALW will write new songs for the movie

"I wonder how this will do? Does anyone think that this whole phantom craze is going a little too far?, to the point where its starts getting annoying? "

Phantom of the Opera has been annoying some theater fans for a long time now. I would guess that most theater lovers would like to see a film musical succeed just as a matter of principle though---anything to encourage a possible rennaissance of the genre.

This cast looks to me to be long on movie actors who look good in the parts and are good actors. I'm not so sure about the musical quality of the show.

Credited cast:
Gerard Butler .... The Phantom
Emmy Rossum .... Christine Daaé
Patrick Wilson .... Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny
Simon Callow .... Monsieur Andre
Miranda Richardson .... Madame Giry
Minnie Driver .... Carlotta Guidicelli
rest of cast listed alphabetically
Jennifer Ellison .... Meg Giry
James Fleet .... Monsieur Lefevre
Ciarán Hinds .... Monsieur Firmin
Victor McGuire .... Ubaldo Piangi
Murray Melvin .... Monsieur Reyer

A lot of them I am not familiar with. Patrick Wilson should be fine. Emmy looks right for the part and should be able to sing the role---she was in the children's chorus of the Met for a few years and has sung in films, I think. Butler's only previous professional singing was in a rock band a few years back. I like Ciran Hinds, but I don't think he is a singer. Victor McGuire was described in one article as playing the role of the "famous baritone" Piangi so he might sing, but they've changed the tempermental tenor to a baritone. Has Minnie Driver ever done any singing?

I think that there might well be a lot of dubbing. That bothers a lot of movie fans not at all, but I don't like it.

ALW will almost certainly write a new song so it can be eligible for the Academy Awards. We don't know yet if any of the stage musical's songs will be omitted.

A lot of people have little faith in director Schumacher.

It will be interesting to see what they come up with when all is said and done and the film is in the can. Updated On: 10/21/03 at 08:38 PM

well~
I am excited about eh film. I hope it will not cut any songs, but usually, they will because of some production reasons. I hope they will do it better than CHICAGO! When will it start filming? Does anyone know whether ALW is still using the costumes from the show or design a new set of costumes? I think the stage costumes fit on screen!
I dunno about the cast. Patrick Wilson will be gd. Miranda Richardson as Mme. Giry!!!! I think she'll be fine as I have sen her in The Black Adder, Alice in the Wonderland and The Hours. She seems fine for the role, but will Glenn Close be better or some one more old and looks more crab? I dunno about the rest of the cast. No comments about them then. I hope they will make a REALLY gd film, not just for winning awards and all those stuuf, as CHICAGO was. I hope they make the movie for the fans and a better vision effects. I will be so disappointed if they did sth simialar as CHICAGO. This is the 3rd musical I love most.

Unlike the makers of the Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings films, the makers of the Phantom film don't seem to be catering at all to the fans. I get the strong feeling that they are aiming at a much broader audience.

I don't know anything about the costumes, but I would be very surprised if they were not designed specifically for the film.

Filming has already begun---don't remember just when they started.

I think and don't hold me to this that there might be some photos of the cast in full costume in the Dec. Vanity Fair.

I know a number of cast photos were taken and the hope is they would be in the issue, it depends if they want to release the images this soon as the film comes out NEXT Christmas season. Joel has a long relastionship with debuting his film leads in the magazine. The closely guarded pictures are of course of Butler as the Phantom, I'm getting conflicting reports of exactly what he'll look like.

This movie will suck, the way all movies directed by Joel Schumacher suck. Get ready for a catastrophe of Showgirl proportions.
