yeah... i think once the tweens put together that their fav green girl is also a rent head they'll go nuts. she better start hiring extra security.

LuvTheEmcee, I get what you are saying, but that's not behavior that's relative only to fourteen year olds or only to the film itself.
And of course it's not the same, but not everyone is going to get some real connection out of it. And that doesn't mean they won't get something out of it. And sure, as old-school Rent-Head, I'd agree that what you (or I or many people on this board) get out if it is probably more fulfilling (to us). But as I said when I edited my last post, none of that negates what the show means to any of us.
Edited to Add: And I'm in total agreement on the Adam hotness factor. And his voice makes me melt.
I agree with you Krigas. Maybe they will get some sort of message out of it and maybe they won't. At least they will be exposed to the message that Larson was trying to put out.
At lease Larson's message will be put out to the masses and if 1, 2, 3 or 20,000 walk away a bit more tolerant or a bit more aware of things, then mission accomplished.

why must adam be so sexy?
why must he be married?
why is he not married to me?
oh, such sadness
Look at it this way:
Teenagers loving Rent = More money to the studio
More money to the studio = other studios being jealous
Other studios being jealous = more movie musicals optioned and produced
More movie musicals produced = more discussions on BWW about why all these kids think they are "true" fans of some property we all loved years ago.

Why is it that lately when I need to get something done (in this case clean my apartment) I keep getting sucked into interesting discussions on here? Grrr.
*collective melt*
Kringas, exactly; I was making an example.
Sorry Kringas. :)
Amen Kringas!
If someone falls in love with Rent's message who cares if it was because of the movie or onstage? I don't see why people are getting so defensive about "their show" as if it is their own personal secret. Guess what, lots and lots of people love Rent and it's message.
The fangirls will be annoying and flood the boards for awhile, but once something new peaks their interest they will move on to something new.
Those who love it for what it is will be lifelong fans forever regardless if they have been fans from it's conception or from the movie.

Not to threadjack, and this might be a thread in intself, but jasonf's post makes me wonder - what makes a "true" fan? How is that measured? Can it be measured? What is the standard of measurement? Who measures it?
Subjectivity.
Kringas thinks deep philosophical broadway thoughts. I guess thats true though. I think of a true "fan" as the opposite of someone who jumps on a fad.... longevity maybe? I dunno.
I will run when the teenygirls come flooding bww.

LuvTheEmcee, I know you were just making an example. I hope you didn't think I was attacking your point (I always worry when I start getting involved in a discussion on here). I think everyone is making very good points about this.
PS, Emcee, I think Raul is to die for, too.

Queen, I just think too damn much. Period.
And meanwhile, my kitchen is still a disaster!
Oh, no no! Not at all - I just didn't mean to cause confusion as to making it seem like I thought such actions were exclusive. No hard feelings whatsoever. You'd know if I felt attacked, heh.
Also - Raúl is to die for, as hands down, the sexiest, most beautiful man I've ever seen. And cleaning? psh! Who needs a clean kitchen?!
Kringas - you should write a daily question. It could be like "Deep Thoughts" from SNL.
Hahaha
I just hope the movie turns out as good as we hope. Yes, there will be some new fans, but that should raise the ticket sales for the actual broadway show. Because now everyone saw the movie and they want to see what it started out as....hopefully.
Yes, the new "I LOVE ADAM" scream team shall be annoying, but truthfully, who doesn't love that man? ^_~ Also, if they are true fans, they will stick with the show and go beyond the movie. They will know what Rent is about eventually. If they are not, then the will watch the movie, eaither say the loved or hated it, and get on with their lives. Of course there are a few who will be rent obsessed and have only seen the movie and claim they are the biggest fan. But then, that's when we come in to set them straight. ^_~
Just my two cents.
Deep thought for the day.... cleaning is grossly overrated
Isn't the answer of how we measure fandom REALLY obvious???
Measure in love!
OK, I'm beating myself up as we speak for that one.

Oh, my fellow BWWrs, you don't want see the Kitchen de Kringas. It is vile. It must be cleaned. Now!
I will check back sporadically to see if anyone has any new points.
Or to figure out a way to p**s off LuvTheEmcee.
PS, Emcee. When did you fall for Raúl? I wonder which of us can claim to have loved him first?

Nah, I was hoping someone would bite. You win!
You probably can, Kringas, because I'm younger than you probably think I am. I fell for him the night I got my TTB CD, which was about a week and a half before Taboo closed. That voice had me right away. I saw Taboo, but he was out with a vocal injury, and on rest before the CD was made.
The first time I ever saw him on stage was only a bit over a year ago, in The Normal Heart. I knew about him by then, but just wasn't ready for everything that he is, and everything that he can do. His performance changed who I am. I'll never forget it.
/end loving threadjack. Happy cleaning!

All right. I fell for him sooner (it was when I saw his picture in the Rocky Horror cd booklet), but I have yet to see him live. So you've got that on me.
Plus, you're a woman. So that's another point in your favor.
The more I think of it, the more I think you may be my nemesis.
Seriously, there's a tofu jambalya in my fridge that looks like it's going to start talking to me any minute now.
Well, that doesn't sound very good. Kill the tofu!
Though I think I'm confused, as to how being female factors in? ("Labels are for cans!")
That picture is mind-altering. I don't know how such a kooky character can be made SO ATTRACTIVE. Hello, leather pants?
Live, he is a force like none-other. There are so many performances I wish I'd seen live.
