Not sure how I feel about that... now that the movie is coming out, a bunch of kids I know are like "OMG, RENT is/looks soooo cool!" I love rent. Whatever. Rent was around before you were born, and had it not been put up on a really really big screen, you would have never heard about it. Imposter rentheads.
I was at one of my sister's soccer games and the girls who usd to come over and make fun of me for liking RENT are now singing "Seasons of Love" while skipping around on the field.
It bothers me.
sally, thats really annoying
all part of whats cool now...

I wasn't alive when Gone With The Wind was made originally, but I still love it. Why can't the RENT movie be used as a means to find a whole new group of fans?
I think what will bother me is the like... eleven year olds who think that Adam's hot, but don't care about or "get" what's behind so much of the show. For the new fans that embrace the message and care about it, more power to them.
And it isn't all about age; I was ten years old when RENT opened on Broadway, and that shouldn't change how much of a fan others consider me to be.
MC- sooo tru! It's not that they can't be fans. They just don't GET it. The think its a happy little story. And they're not even theater fans, just teeneybopper movie goers.
Emcee, based on our past, I never thought that I would say this, but we are on a roll today with having the same opinions. Your words are mine exactly.
Exactly, I have no problem with people falling in love with RENT thanks to the movie. But these girls are kinda hot headed and don't really GET the message...just another thing that's gonna become cool.
My opinions are rapidly changing on all of this, Classic. The past few months have been HUGE eye-openers, thanks to many involved with the film, and to one in specific with major convincing powers.
I'm just not looking forward to more people squealing about how Adam is the sex god of the universe. *gets earmuffs*

I agree that it is a bit annoying, but on the bright side hopefully the new fans from the movie will come to see the show and keep it running for years to come. Let them love it, but know that those little girls will never have stories about waiting on the sidewalk in New York City all night long to see the original cast. I am proud to own a t-shirt signed by all original cast members that I got over several viewings of the show when I was 16 back in 1996 - they will never have anything like that.
People will like it, and people will go crazy- you cant control that, but as long as they actually love the MATERIAL, and not the hype, everything's cool.

I had to tell someone the other day that the beautiful girl in the trailer was.... Angel. No clue. Just thought it looked like a happy NY movie.

They just don't GET it. The think its a happy little story. And they're not even theater fans, just teeneybopper movie goers.
I don't understand who "they" are and if "they" say think it's just a "happy little story" the "they" will have rude awakening when "they" actually see it in a theater.
I think the problem is that often fans of a show (singer, band, tv show) believe they have proprietary designs on it because "they were there first." If that's truly the case, then anyone who became a fan of Rent due to it's Broadway incarnation don't have anything on those who saw it Off-Broadway. And they can't hold a candle to those who saw it NYTW. And they don't have the ownership that those who read the early drafts read, etc....
It seems a little silly (and disingenuous) to start worrying about new fans or questioning their motives.
We'll all be feeling awfully stupid if this all doesn't end up transpiring. heh.
OMG! Idina after the RENT movie!!! She will forever be stalked by a group of 14 year old girls. Kinda feel sorry for her.
Kringas- I understand where you're coming from, but it's nice to have fellow fans who actually UNDERSTAND what's going on.

But, SallyBrown, who is to say they don't know what's going on? Or, rather, who are any of us (me included) to say that we know better than anyone else?
All art is subjective and everyone is going to get something different out of it.
Edited to Add: And even if the film does open up the floodgates to a bunch of kids who don't get the "true message" (which itself is subjective), there's going to have to be at least one person out there who never saw the show, knows nothing about it and sees the movie and does get something out of it.
And finally, just because others don't get what you (and I mean a collective "you") get out if it doesn't negate what it is you do get out of it.
To a degree, but a twelve-year-old flailing about saying they love this movie because Adam Pascal is the hottest thing she's ever seen in her entire life - is that the same as someone who feels at least *some* connection?
Those are hormones, not subjectivity to art.

QueenAnne -- you really think so? Idina's crazy fan base is from Wicked and the message of that show, right? I don't think the character of Maureen is quite to fangirl-inducing. I would probably say Mimi would be more-so. She gets to wear fun clothes and kiss the hot lead guy -- assuming we're talking about straight 14-year-old girls...which may not be a fair assumption.
It's sort of fun to try and see this movie as if I don't know everythign I do about it (i.e. QueenAnne's comment about the boy behind Angels' pretty face)
There were probably already RENTheads that didn't get the show. But I guess if you don't get the show then you are not a Renthead anyway. I know for a fact that there were already people who loved Rent music but had know idea what it was really about. So...I say, the more Rentheads, the better. I mean it will be great for some of the coolest actors/actresses on the planet!

Hey, hey. I'm not denying that Adam is one of the most attractive men I've ever seen. At all.
