New Sweeney CD hidden tune

Once again the new cast recording had hit us with another fun feature. During "God That's Good" at the part when Sweeney sings "Is this a chair fit for a king?" (3:13 minutes into the song) you can hear Toby (Manoel Felciano) playing the tune for "not while i'm around" on his violin. Did anyone else notice this?

Sorry if this has been discussed before, just wanted to share.

Hidden tune? Try brilliant orchestrations...

re: New Sweeney CD hidden tune

It's not really hidden, it's pretty noticeable in the orchestrations.

Good point, munkustrap178.

well no one else seemed to notice it, so i'd call it hidden and brilliant orchestrations.

re: New Sweeney CD hidden tune

munk beat me to it.

It wasn't hidden. Hidden would be some bonus track at the end of the CD.

No one mentioned it maybe because there's more going on...?

*amused* Hidden? Like bonus features in a song or something?

re: New Sweeney CD hidden tune

The fact that they play all their own instruments is a fun feature. They also use thier instruments as sound effects more than usual. The other fun feature is that this cast has the best vocals...(at least in my opinion) Not to mention the fullness it gives the listener with only a small amount of instruments. You can continue the list if you want. There a bunch of other fun features if you see the performance.

I actually think it's cool that they incorperate one song into another song.
And i still think its hidden because you don't notice it right away. Hidden things usually work out that way. A bonus track at the end of the cd wouldn't be hidden, i think that would be pretty noticable. And bonus tracks only let you hear stuff that's cut.

re: New Sweeney CD hidden tune

Oh I'm sorry, only joking. It was kind of a cute statement. It's not so much that it's a hidden tune but it's just an added complexity to the arrangement of the song. One thing about Sondheim is that he tends to write complicated harmony.

If you listen closely to the score, or other scores he has written, you'll find the reoccurrence of melodies in other songs is actually quite common. My favorite example is the song "Beautiful" from Sunday in the Park with George, although you have to be familiar with the whole score, since it's like one long song. If you are familiar, have you noticed that Finishing the Hat = Putting it Together? Not only do composers disguise melodies, but they can invert them, all sorts of things.

These are just composition techniques. It's not exactly hidden, but it is the sort of thing a person notices more on repeated listenings, unless you have... would I call it an advanced ear for music? I don't want to sound pretentious.

I checked the original version and it's not there (unless I just couldn't hear it), so I think this particular little tidbit is just in the new production, so the arranger put it there.

Do you have the original? You should check that out too.

I think that Sweeney, more than any of Sondheim's other scores, utilizes leitmotif the best--and the coolest part is that if you listen to both cast recordings, the recurring melodies and refrains are different sometimes, but fitting based on the different material.

Probably after Sweeney, the show that uses this best is like Roninjoey mentioned--Sunday in the Park With George.

Yeah I do have the original and I love it. I only wish they made a dvd of the original broadway cast... you know with len cariou and sara rice.

re: New Sweeney CD hidden tune

Although Sweeney is a bigger score than Sunday in the Park. Plus, it's composed in the style of opera, so the music is actually telling the story at times (such as the reoccurrence of the Beggar Woman motif, "Alms, alms!" at key moments). There's just a lot more music in it. Also Into the Woods and Passion utilize a lot of leitmotif. Merrily We Roll Along has the "Good Thing Going" theme that is constantly warping throughout the show.

Here's a good one. "The Road You Didn't Take" and "Buddy's Blues" from Follies.

Originally Sondheim was going to compose Into the Woods by giving each character an instrument, but he abandoned that pretty quickly.
