It would be absurd to think that the creators of any story that attempted to fill in the 'missing years' in the story of the Beales would not draw on similar iconic moments of the documentary for inspiration and to create key note forshadowing for recognizable phrases and sequences from the 1975 film.

Taking that into consideration, I think this looks nothing like the musical, which I think its safe to say is only VERY loosly based on historical facts. I also believe it was the intention of the creators of the musical to create a 'back story' that while rooted in some plausibility also captured the style of musical theatre storytelling that would have actually been seen in 1941. There are enormous leaps in Hollywood license.

I think this film looks fabulous on its own terms. I think Lange and Barrymore will in a very different way give just as much credence to these women as Ebersole and Wilson were able to on Broadway.
